What colour to paint?

I am moving in to our new house soon. What colour do you suggest I could paint this great room? I saw a red fireplace it seems interesting. I am not a fan of dull colours. I think this olive colour does not do justice to this room.

I am always yakking on about choosing paint after the space has the furniture in it and so I will repeat that. I agree that the color right now does not work and that is because it really doesn't go with what is in there. I love the red fireplace but that would be a choice I would make for sure after the room is put together. What you put in a room drives the wall color and it is much easier tp find a paint to go with your furniture than the other way around.

Lovely rug and so many nice colours. You could try Shaded White (F&B) which is a stoney cream colour, China Clay Deep (which is a browny pink) by Little Greene or Smoked Trout (F&B). Stoney colours and dirty pinks look really good with blue.

Little Greene Bassoon is a lovely colour. A dirty warm yellow, more complex than bright yellow but still strong enough to make an impact. Or, Slaked LIme by Little Greene is a lovely grey that can read as warm.

I would leave the sleepers au natural. If you paint them then they will need repainting every couple of years and can become a chore. However if you want to paint everything then go for one colour otherwise it can look a little bitty. I also prefer natural fencing and I would add a few more shrubs. I can see you have a few already so when the leaves unfold it would look rather lovely.

Another suggestion is Dulux Egyptian Cotton. I had it in my bedroom and it does have slight pink undertones so maybe worth getting a sample pot. It is quite similar to Skimming Stone. I suggest you paint your samples onto A4 cards and try them on different walls in the room stuck with some blue tack. I was advised to do this and it really helps. It works better than lots of paint samples on a wall which can be confusing. Purbeck Stone is a lovely taupe. This is Egyptian Cotton.

Taupe works well with red. At least I hope it does as my great room has taupe walls with cardinal red furniture.
