The area under your stairs can be the best place in your home to find unutilised space. Depending on the square footage, you can create a cloakroom, office, storage for your cleaning products or even a compact pantry.

Comments (7)Yep, we use TP-Link power line products because the layout of our house causes havoc with the wi-fi signal from where the router point is to where our office is (other end of house). TP-link is BRILLIANT. It really is. Cheap, quick to setup and the instructions are simple. We have a old pair, and a newer pair and they all sync. I have 170Mbps D/L speed on average through it (thats me AND my husband and we're gamers and stream a fair bit of content). We had looked at tracing network cables in walls, under skirting, around the outside of the house, and lifting floorboards and running network cables along joists (they run the wrong way), and this is BY far the quickest, easiest, cheapest solution. Comments (24)Hi - in response to Carol's comment, I attach a photo of what we've done so far. We had the power company come in and move the meter down slightly (that was the bit on the left in the original photo above) and put it onto a smaller backplate for us. Then we had our electrician in to put in a new fusebox. Then we had our carpenter in to make a small box picking up the moulding on the inside front door, which also matches the doors leading off the hallway. We had the plasterer in to make good the area. So far that's where we are as we don't want to paint until we do the whole hallway, and first we need to change the radiator from the old flat panel one to something more in keeping with the property. I particularly resonated with Jonathan's comment above, with the thought that the eye wants to 'read' the ceiling and floor details...we felt a big box going across the whole top of the front door would feel a little 'top heavy' - as we came down the stairs and as you entered the hallway from the kitchen. We are pleased that the footprint of the whole thing was massively reduced. It turns out to be a handy little place to stash a torch as well. Comments (25)Hi, I love the idea that Spaced Out has offered above as that would have been my suggestion upon first reading as well. I am about to 'paint a runner' on my own white painted stairs at the moment to compliment grey walls and a black front door - considering black similar to the example in blue shown above. I think it can be quite striking and very easily fits into a Scandinavian interior. Do choose paint wisely, and spend on quality in this case as stairs are hit with heavy feet and can show wear and tear quickly particularly if they are original. I have the same in my own house and have already had to do touch ups twice since we moved in two years ago. Another suggestion would be to ask your painter to put sand in your paint - not too much but just a bit - as it creates a natural tread on stairs that can be quite helpful. 9 years agolast modified: 9 years agoThe tiny space under our stairs in our basement is the only 'room' in the house that didn't have any design input from me and, as you can see, it's a total disaster.
I told the plumber I'm disappointed the tanks aren't colour coordinated - he promised to pay more attention next time. And I told hubby he shouldn't have paid the painter, as I'm not happy with the finish in there... :))
Seriously now, as the whole house is underfloor heated and on four floors, we needed somewhere to house the tanks, pumps, etc; luckily the space has a door that rarely gets opened, so at least it's out of sight.

9 years agoMy understairs cupboard was full of junk plus had the gas and electricity meters in. I had a look at property sales websites looking for ways I could add a downstairs loo. Found a house where they had added a loo in the understairs cupboard and created a small hallway to divide it from the living and eating areas. I then used Houzz to get some inspiration on how to decorate such a small space. Very pleased with the outcome.
So here are some photos of before and after with the floor plan of my house (without the work done) and the floor plan that gave me the idea.

8 years agoWe're using it as our "wine cellar". Unlike the rest of the ground floor it's bare concrete and the coldest part of the house. In fact, the understates space is set to expand when we finally get around to do works :-)

8 years agoAt the moment nothing, we've just recently pulled out our old staircase with cupboard under that had everything you need but don't want on show. Planning to put back an oak cupboard only half width of stairs for the vacuum floor steamer and ironing board

8 years agoOur builder used the space under our staircase to build a wine cellar with a nice curved window in it. Opposite the staircase is a great bar that we named "The Staircase Lounge". I really enjoy decorating this space at Christmas time.
