What's your worst household disaster?

In any renovation scenario, or even just having a property of your own, household accidents and disasters are commonplace enough. But what's your worst one? Ever had a really design disaster, or plumbing problem? I've had a couple of nightmare situations, but just from sheer grief it caused amongst my flat-mates, I'd have to put down when I spilt a pint of milk across the carpet and didn't realise until a day or two to late....it's safe to say we didn't have any guests over that week. And I certainly didn't win best flat-mate for a while.

I'm having a bit of a handle issue since the holes in the pull handles on the four drawers are 83mm centre to centre and there are not many options with that sizing in brushed brass. I've found a couple of possibilities from china but with the problems there I'm not sure how long they will take to arrive....See MoreBed disaster! Advice desperately wanted!
Comments (143)Well, maybe when the kitchen stuff is out you can try different options (ones you want to try) in the wardrobe area and see what you like best. (Actually, there isn't that much stuff next to wardrobe.....up to you, though. Hmmmm. Comments (11)A long, long time ago in a town far, far away we owned a 1930's semi which needed completely re-plumbing. Not being afraid of the task (or perhaps a bit ignorant of the complexity) I did it myself and all was going to plan with a new wash basin fixed to the wall but not connected to the drain and all the pipework run under the floorboards and connected to the taps. Now being a clever sort of fellow, I put the plug in the sink to prevent any "mishaps" should a tap get accidentally turned on. From deep in the house, the voice of my wife asked if I would be much longer as the nailing down of the floorboards was causing a problem with TV so in order to speed things up, I nailed through the last board in the centre forgetting that the run of new pipe was underneath. There was a short panic, a frantic tearing up of the board and a subsequent arc of water flying above my head and neatly landing in the empty basin. I could not have planned this disaster better but when the sink started to fill up, I got a bowl underneath it and gently removed the plug whereupon the bowl filled whilst the arc of escaping water continued the fill from above. As panic had now set in and I was unable to get downstairs to turn off the stopcock, I simply emptied the bowl into the basin in a moment of absolute brilliance. Having re-invented perpetual motion, I then had to yell instructions downstairs so that said TV complainer could turn off the stopcock. Comments (16)Working for others can be a challenge but working together on our own home, both outspoken and strongheaded, well... that's another story but still... When my (now) wife and I were moving in together we both had our own place and very different furniture tastes / preferences. My wife coming from years of working in a very strict Bauhaus-ideal based interior design consultancy had spent many months pay on design classics. My tastes were, as she put it, 'underdeveloped'. I didn't agree of course but they were just very different and mainly through experience, not so much 'Bildung' (education). My idea of a good couch consisted of, first can you sit on it very comfortably and second does it look okay. Apart from that I had collected and salvaged quite a few quirky heirlooms from my immediate family, mainly Art Deco style and age. Seems like a clash, right? Well NO. We both agreed when we bought our home that we would look for what worked best for the house and for ourselves. Starting at two key pieces we arranged our styles and combined them. For our dining room we had one key piece we agreed upon. An antique oak synagogue bench was what started us off. Everything else was coordinated with the 'very present' wooden bench. The rest, we agreed, had to be calmer and be able to appose the bench. For our living room we started with a rug we both loved, our real first purchase together, a Persian rug with a different colour set, ranging from bright green to light blue instead of the regular dark reds and yellows. As long as you both have something you love to start you off you will both see which of your existing furniture will work together and which ones don't. Starting with agreement is a golden rule. The old bench was combined with Fritz Hansen, Arne Jacobsen chairs. A vintage industrial lamp she already had, over the dining room table I designed myself (stainless steel frame with solid oak top, treated with a whitewash and hardwax, similar to our oak flooring)....See Moresoozmacrae
