Need advice for small living room
Comments (23)Hi Kate. It looks a nice room. You only have a couple of pics in your ideabook so there's not much to go on in terms of style and colour. Maybe go for something like the first pic however with a pale grey paint with a blue/lavender undertone on the walls (which your sofas appear to have) and also paint the radiators the same colour. You don't mention if you need privacy, if not, I'd go for Roman blinds hung outside the recess in the wall colour to make the room feel bigger/taller. Similar to the pic id add navy, white and deep mauve cushions and a throw mixing texture (include some velvet!) and pattern. If you add brass for lamps etc it will add warmth in addition to some green for a plant and flowers for the coffee table. This may be a no no (!) but a light grey cowhide rug may work (without markings) to avoid rug "rules". I also like the panelling in the first pic and you could use wallpaper panelling on one wall to the same effect if you're on a budget. The last 2 pics are just really showing how a cowhide rug and panelling could work in an elegant scheme with industrial touches. Depending on layout I might remove the shelves and add a huge mirror over the dining table although ideally it would be on the long wall to make the room feel wider. Dining tables do look good against the back of sofas which may potentially (!) work if your sofas were opposite each other on the short walls and perhaps the door opened the other way but then I'm not sure where the tv would go!...See MoreHelp needed for sitting room refurbishment
Comments (9)Hi Michael. Had a look at your idea books and I see you like a few elements of mid century modern design. That’s good news as this is very popular right now so you’ll be spoilt for choosing furniture and accessories:) Original pieces such as the Elbow chair by Hans Wegner and this table by West elm (see pics) can be expensive but there are a few replicas so worth shopping around. Have a look at second hand sites and shops as you may come across a genuine article from this era. I think best way to start is think what will be your most expensive purchase, could be the flooring, sofas, window treatment etc., then work around that. Paint colour is easy to change if needed. Also think about placement of furniture. I think a round table would look great in the window bay. Give the piano more prominence somehow with a large artwork above. Also think about lighting. Perhaps a huge drum shade for the central light and a floor lamp for cosy ambience. You may like the Hicks hexagon wallpaper from Cole and son as I see you like geometric designs and there are many similar designs. Anyway, hope I’ve helped a little, added a couple of random google inspo pics as well:)...See MoreNeed help with my dining room
Comments (36)Hello. It looks like the room needs to be softened. The great thing about white is that you can add to it. What are your favourite colours and add white to it to make it lighter. Is there a favourite object you have in your dinning room and add some accessories to match it. You can soften by using wood plants and lighting. You have two box shelves why not put then together in one of the alcoves. That would give you the impression of a bookshelf. You could then get a plank of wood or shelf and place it on it. Which would leave the top to put big books plants / favourite things on it. There are lots of thing you can use to prop up a shelf as long as they are the same height, stools, boxes, wooden blocks, square or other shaped glass vases... You could change the colour of the box shelf fronts, there are an amazing range of paints so get a tester pots or B&Q or other DIY shop will make out colours for you just take the thing you want to match with you. Also there are lots of different colour duck tapes that you could use. Or get wallpaper samples and line the cubes or the outside edge. Do not over fill the cubes with books so you see the lining. Change the look of the files, and boxes by covering them, again wall paper samples, or even fabrics. If you have a fav dress, skirt, trousers, duvet even, that have a pattern or something you like, but no longer fits, use them instead to cover them. In the other alcove, match it to make it symmetrical or put a large plant pot in there. Resting next to it can be more books. Add a picture next to it. Lighting would soften the area's. Some battery powered string lights which you can put in a glass vase, or on the perimeter of the alcoves. You can pin them using a stapler or tool station does an extra strong double sided tape called mammoth. Note it will take your paint off if not careful, so to check position, use bluetac first. The chimney breast could be your favorite pastel colour or strong colour. Or the white framed mirror could be the favourite colour. You could put lots of framed and unframed pictures on it. Charity shops have an amazing frames for pennies. I have even found postersize frames and 3D frames for under a £1. Websites like freeprints will print off pictures for the price of postage, a bit more if you want bigger images. You can frame postcards, images of from magazines, newspapers. Make your own, typographic inspiration, or a persons quote from your computer and frame it... Another shelf / over mantle under the mirror would give another dimension to the area. P.S. Do not forget ebay and local charity shops for shelving. I hope this helps.... but most of all experiment and have fun....See MoreHelp! Need some advice for my bedroom in a flat-share
Comments (11)Hear are some thoughts- I see there are cases on the wardrobe. make use of them for storage- put items such as linen, extra pillows and off season clothes in them, or anything else that needs storing! A thought could be to place some stick on hooks onto the side of the wardrobe to take towels, and seasonal jackets, to keep items being thrown over desk chair or draws. If you can find them in black then the hooks won't look so temporary and will tie into the suggestions below. A perfect place for a framed map would be over the bed, either a single large one or multiple smaller frames. Frames could be wood or a simple black frame. You can use stick on hooks these days to avoid wall damage. Taller bedside lamps, i know there are the sconces but they seem a bit high to be useful as bedsides. You could go with a dark anglepoise style - a little industrial to tie in with the metal beam. Bedding - invest in a more appropriate size doona. If the bed is a double, you could go queen or even king size for the doona to drape well down the sides and properly cover the bed. If nothing else this will shift the feeling from a student room! Doona cover - a simple one colour but textured cover would keep the scheme simple - cotton is the flavor of the moment. A dark charcoal, darker silver gray? My male other half can never see the point of additional pillows but I'm sorry, a couple of dress pillows does help to fill out a bed, even though they are moved for sleeping! And a bedhead. You can buy a simple one without buying a full bed frame. It looks like you have additional space on one side - the left as you face the bed head wall. If possible i would see if the chest of draws fit in this space to free up the other side from clutter. If it doesn't fit it might worth considering a taller, narrower set - if so, look for the same wood color and style. Alternatively the desk might work in that position, and the drawers could move to the desk location. Actually, the more I think on it , the desk there would keep the desk area from feeling tucked into the corner. Keep the drawer top clear of things- a leather box on top can be the go to place for things like phone, wallet, watch etc. And keep tidy!...See MoreCharlotte Appleton
