Hi Patricia, I come across this problem a lot, I match the colour samples in the studio and they work perfectly. When we take them to site the lighting in the room totally changes the look of the colour pallets we chose. Lesson one for us, "always" put the colour samples in the room before agreeing them with the client. Lighting is the single most important factor with pastel colours. If its a north facing room colours will always look dull. Due to the position of the window the units under the window will always be in shadow which neutralises the blue tones and brings out the grey. Two ways of approaching this. 1 Re paint with a stronger blue to offset the neutralising effects of the lighting. 2 Change the lighting. Put an extension into the room and get a few different lights, LED warm white, Soft white, brilliant while etc. Look at the effects in the day and in the evening. When you find the light source that brings out the blue tones use that on all the lights in the room... With regards to colour on the walls, at the risk of being boring I always go white. When you put white up against a pastel colour the pastel shades really pop out. When you put another colour in it alters / distracts from the pastel. Hope that helps, Martin: www.angel-martin.com

If you are considering going down the dark grey routes, have a look at the paint range by Paint Library or Little Greene Paint Company rather than Farrow and Ball. They both have a much broader range of greys to choose from and you will be able to find a grey with an undertone that works with the rest of your scheme. You can order the colours charts from their websites or from http://www.designerpaint.com/ As you have a brown sofa I would look towards a grey that has some softness from a touch of brown in it. A personal favourite is Paint Library's Monument. It comes out much darker than the colour on their website, but has a softness that I don't think Downpipe does. Also look at Little Greene's French Grey. Having said all that, I think Dabrovska Design's idea of picking up on the jadey green you have in your room from your cushions is lovely. As for where to put the colour, I think the composition of your sideboard would benefit from a strong colour behind it. However, your sofa also looks a bit lost on the pale wall. You could solve all of this through a tonal scheme...the very dark behind the sideboard and the rest of the walls in the palest version of the same colour. Again both Paint Library and Little Greene do 'colour scale' which make these choices very easy for you. You clearly love styling, so I am sure once you pick a couple of new wall colours you will have no trouble tying the whole space together very well.

Fabulous ideas everyone, keep them coming:-) Carolina, my first thought was also a mirror, maybe an antique style one. Definitely something to think about. Minnie101, I love your inspiration as always, love the blue cameo box image, will definitely test out some decoupage on the little bedside cabinet. To all, must say I’m not much for chalk paint, never liked the feel of it although you can get some good effects plus you can always varnish/wax over it. Just feel for this piece I neeeed colour! Our hallway can get rather gloomy at the best of times (north facing with only the door for daylight). I do love natural wood but the cabinet, although nicely shaped is just cheap pine and not the best quality. I didn’t pay much for it so feel justified in painting it. Emily, i’ll probably get the Land Rover enamel paint just because I want to see how it compares to standard gloss, watch this space! Here’s my inspo pic for hallway although ours hasn’t got the side bit round the stairs, it’s slightly wider and we need storage for bike and shoes etc.
