Help with modernisation project!

Hi everyone, my hall stairs and landing need a modernisation and I would love to hear people's ideas as I am stuck! I would like to keep the orange curtains (see pics) so need to design around that.

Specifically;

1. What flooring would you suggest? I have a dog so it needs to be practical. I can only really think of a beige carpet but maybe I should consider tiles....

2. What colours for the walls? I am getting them replastered so will be starting from scratch. I am thinking grey as I really want a contemporary look...

The house looks from the pictures to be a period property or period house styling, the front door style and the fact that you have a dado rail. Keeping that in mind you can go for a more contemporary colour scheme the grey you mentioned, using a two colour scheme as you have the dado rail and as was popular in that era. A slightly darker shade at the bottom a shade lighter on top. By using either Farrow and Ball for example skimming stone at the top and then Elphants breath at the bottom. Or you have Sanderson mist flower and smoke tree, Little Greene also have a great range shallows and Inox. You will need to get their colour charts and check the colours for your hall as light and position will effect the colours.
I would agree if you go with the grey then a striped carpet incorporating greys would look lovely but if possible have it as a runner with rod, they come in chrome. This combines the house era with a contemporary touch.
You can either keep the striped carpet throughout the hall or go for tiles. You have a dog so wood would get marked and scratched.
As for the curtains not really great for a hallway maybe see if yo can use them elsewhere i the house. Plenty of fabric to make a bed runner and cushions.

I would go for a light coloured wood floor and keep the walls a white giving the space a contemporary and modern feel. An example in the picture below.

If you want a contemporary look I would reconsider styling around the curtains. While orange can be contemporary these curtains are not.
Maybe something like the pic below (if you wanted to keep the orange).

Just another opinion...I like the suggestion that others posted to remove the bush and if possible, to put entry door in it's place, to remove the post and replace it with a support beam and brackets, replace garage door, add low wall to separate your driveway from the neighbor's, plant a dwarf tree in the front yard along with some edging plants... But with so many possibilities to choose from, perhaps you could accomplish your desire to make your home stand out from the others inexpensively by...painting over the white part of the house, the downspout directly above the canopy and the garage door to match the lightest brick color. Choose the darkest brick color for all of the other trim and windows. Patch and seal the driveway to freshen it (until you know if you will be permitted to do anything more permanent), definitely taking out the bush and doing some low cost planting just to add some color. It takes time to settle on your needs, style, budget, etc. But it's worthwhile to spend a little cash and effort to get a bit of satisfaction that things are looking better!

I agree that the TV looks better on the wall rather than in front of the window. I also agree that there is too much furniture for the room but since you have only just taken the plastic off I imagine it is too new to get rid of anything but perhaps one of the chairs could fit somewhere else. Since you have a new suite I would repaint the walls and get a new carpet. I would choose from a palate of silver grey, mid grey, off white, cream, dark brown. I would keep the largest items plain but add pattern with cushions and blinds and wall art. I would add accent colours of red and black on cushions and accessories.

I was invited to provide a #home styling, #interior design and project co-ordination role for these owners as they had had not been able to sell their #Central # London, 2 bedroom apartment and wanted some help to sell it. F&B Elephants Breath or Manor House Gray Paint Colour on walls (you can scan the colour in and get it matched elsewhere for a cheaper paint) and a darker mushroom brown carpet (similar colour to F&B Charleston Gray) or a charcoal carpet.

I think you could make a feature of either the walls or the floor, and would suggest adding drama - either via tile for the floor, or wallpaper for over the chair rail. I think the older oak's undertones of the doorway can be tweeked forward, as well, and would look for ( or have customized) a more bleached version of oak for a console over the radiator.

If wallpaper or stencilling is an option for you, a modern take on a traditional pattern will give a nod to architectural details already at play. I personally find the raspberry tone more interesting, as you will have three tones of orange already at play (should you add the console or Kedge's nice floor choice, that is). As we all know the stairs get more traffic. Dark colours show the marks more than light so if you want grey consider this for the woodwork. I would choose a nearly white in a wipe-able matt for the walls and a mid grey such as Pavilion Grey for the spindles on the stairs.
I would also paint over the stripped wood on the door and side windows for a cleaner look.
You can easily add pattern with a striped stair carpet or blinds

Keep your gloss work White- skirting and hand rail/staircase.
Either-striped carpet OR 1to2 feature walls with stripe or pattern. Do the feature wall at the wall at the top of the stairs and maybe under the stairs also.
I agree that either painting your door frame area white or a lighter wood effect would look nice too.
You could also change your picture frames to choice of colour and plant pot.
Finally I personally would change the curtains-I know you said you wanted to keep but you could get some from eBay

My tip: hallways and stairways look better when the walls are painted light thus giving an open, airy feel.

Thanks so much for the replies everyone, some great ideas and a lot of food for thought. I am quite attached to the orange curtains but I think you are right that they probably need to go! Stripey carpet on the stairs is a brilliant idea and I think could work really well....

Get rid of the curtains if you don't love them and start again. Orange is a tricky colour to work with. I had orange curtains and carpet and have teamed with blue!
If you have a dog I would consider other options other than carpet for the hall. Or at least invest in an oversized entrance mat. A radiator cover and mirror can unify and open up a narrow space. I have kept the colour scheme going in my small office space at the top of the stairs by adding a plain blind in the same blue and accessories.

Entrance hall tiled, wooden staircase with glass balustrade, the same wooden floor on landing upstairs. I recommend to light wood, you can use white oil for the floor. Very easy to maintaining. Oiled wood is as well very easy to repair. No need to sand down whole floor only the damaged area, as well no need to sand down the oil coats if you want to reprint.
White walls, recommend to use kitchen paint that you can wipe the wall if it become dirty.
Useful with animals at home.
Curtains, it worth to buy termo curtains for glass entrance door. They will make real difference during winter months.

If you love the curtain fabric and it is good order you could make scatter cushions from it.
