Kate - your gorgeous tin tiles for the roof....!

I love these tiles, having seen them on houzz.com. I've got a low kitchen ceiling in a boxy, featureless north-facing room and have been considering using tin tiles to give it some interest and character. Hopefully they will ping light around too. May I ask where you sourced them from, and do they require specialist installation? Many thanks. Denise

Hi Denise, the tiles came from andythornton.com and they are simply glued to the ceiling with no more nails or something similar.

Craig, your question on Lighting Control. The rise of LED has brought new dimension to the lighting control debate. Lighting Control Systems such as Lutron are the best way to dim LED. We use Lighting Control Systems with 0-10v, DALI and DMX dimming and it's possible to get very smooth dimming to really low levels. I don't really want to suggest one system over another. I'm sure they all have their strengths. Rako offers wireless flexibility for retrofit applications, Lutron has a superb heritage and history of fantastic reliability. I'd look for dealers who are really experienced in using the system and a manufacturer with a strong local support infrastructure. Lights which automatically turn on when I enter a room (especially in the kitchen and in the hallway from the bedroom to the bathroom) and lights inside my wardrobes (especially inside the one in the bedroom: I often get up earlier than my hubby, and it may be still dark outside, and I don't want to wake him up while I'm looking for my stockings).

Hi mandskita Usually a designer would look to the context of the barn to see what kind of style is appropriate to the setting based on historic facts or local environment. For example, what roof coverings are used in the local area on the barns in local properties. If these are slate and or reddish/brown clay then that becomes and appropriate place to start (apologies if that is what you have done, I just had to cover myself!) So if these two are the choices the clay tiles will create a lovely contrast to the black, although the slate would create a more sleek design and the blacks and greys would play off of each other nicely too. The profiles or clay tiles are more rounded and the profile of slates is more flat, so that will also change the profile and look of the roof, so that is something to consider. And some inspiration pics just to help you visualise the end result ;-) This looks softer and more rounded and lighter. This has stronger lines and is more powerful.
