When laying a dry Japanese river how deep do you lay the pebbles please ,I am designing my own Japanese garden and I need advice on many things, I have just started to level my back garden thank you

Hi John, when making a dry stream you can lay pebbles to any depth really. If you wanted to lay fewer cobbles you could bed them into cement so that they remain in the original place that you put them. Alternatively you could use smaller diameter pebbles and vary the depths slightly to give the impression of movement down the stream.

Hi Vivienne, Just wading in with my two pence worth! My immediate thought of what you could put on your wall in your first picture of the table with the plants on it is, artwork or mural of a Japanese garden. Everything about Japanese gardens are about equal and opposites, ying and yang if you like. The effect is calming and reaches into the soul to soothe the stresses away. Probably very necessary when you've been working hard and need a break or some downtime. My other immediate thought to your second picture with the corner sofa is, a seaview or something showing an expanse of water or body of water. If we all had a choice to live within eyesight of the sea or body of water, how many of us would say 'Yes!'. Again, another subject of relaxation for the soul. If any of these subjects are of any interest, I'm sure you can source the exact artwork, mural, poster, canvas whatever you decide it's gonna be for these chosen spaces, but here's a glimpse at what I have in mind when I talk of seaview. We have mixed with Japanese and Mediterranean style with very good results. The gravel is not lost at all with the wind and the contours we use a special curb to such use. Usually gives more gravel problems cats and dogs than wind. Its really easy to stay gravel on site. The picture above its a mix style

If you do an online search, you'll find good advice. The main point is that it/s best to use weedkiller on it rather than cut it down, since the roots need to be killed entirely.. Fortunately for your mother and her neighbours, the end of the summer is the best time to treat it. It may need more than one treatment.

Garden planting around decking

Hi Kanye, Here are your design challenges: 1. The decking area has a variety of colour - red brick garage, pale deck, wood fence. 2. The fence isn't straight, but slopes to different levels. 3. The area is very open, which isn't conducive to spending time in. People typically prefer to have some sense of enclosure in outside dining/seating areas. 4. The garden itself is plain lawn, sloping up to the patio area. This area has become a focal point, so needs to be both inviting and offer interest. In other words, you want to be intrigued to get from your house to this area. Design solutions: Without knowing a full brief, this is educated guesswork, but you may consider: 1. Adding a perception of depth by surrounding the sides and rear of the space with a hedge, climbers and trees. Pleached is design classic. Look at trees around your property for clues. Privet is thirsty, so you may consider hornbeam/yew hedge, clematis/ivy and repeat hornbeam pleached or fruit trees. Bring hedge/pleached trees around the front of the deck, to create an opening entrance to the deck. 2. You might consider adding a pergola over a proposed dining area. 3. Consider extending this hedging/tree pattern in the rest of the garden. Why not create an orchard area with path moving through it taking you to the deck. . Also plant beds etc... Kit

Hi Ann, Moss as found in Japan doesn't suit the English climate. To cut a long story short our summers are not humid enough. We would recommend two alternatives. 1). Sagina subulata, this is available in dark green or light green varieties, is mound forming and both have tiny white flowers in the summer. 2). Sedum matting, this is sold on rolls and is laid like turf. The sedum is shown in the photo below.

Ah that explains it. Last year I trialed sheet (Hypnum) and cushion (Leucobrynum) mosses in my garden but unsuccessfully as I have alkaline chalk and really they prefer acidic clay :-( Also my puppy thought moss was a great plaything! However, we do have moss growing between trees along a nearby north-facing riverbank which I will try to identify.
