How wide is the extension and the original room?

I am thinking about adding a similar 2 meter wide double height extension onto my 4 meter wide kitchen and am concerned about natural light getting in. Thanks!

The width of the infill is approximately 2.3m and the kitchen is 3m. If you have a glazed roof, you will get plenty of light, a lot more than you probably have in your existing kitchen if you only have a window at the moment. Keep the colours light.

Hi all, A few of you are right, there is currently a doorway from the hall into the playroom, but my husband didn't want two doors into that room! He thinks we won't use both but I have a feeling that, again, I should've stuck with my original idea of having both doors. So, thanks for your thoughts on this - I think we'll be keeping both doors! We did play with the idea of having the utility betwen the playroom and kitchen, or indeed the other side of the house (as you have done jonathanb1972) but the utility room wall is load bearing and because of other work we are having done, we are already having a lot of steels = costs! although it's is a great layout, we couldnt justify the extra expense of also moving soil pipe etc. I should've said that where the shower room will go is already a toilet so we'll just upgrade that. I am wondering now whether to move the french doors over to be near the dining area and have the lounge/living area more snug-like. As you can imagine my husband just wants me to stick with an idea so he can get on with things, but usually when I am not sure, it's because something isn't right - it's just a case of working out what that is, then ta-da! it all drops into place! I think it must be some sort of sixth sense or something, which can be annoying, but when it works, it's great!!

Thank you Ellie for your comments but we have decided not to extend after all. So the original family room will become the kitchen, the dining room will be still be a dining room, the old kitchen will be divided in half and become the new utility and new downstairs shower room/cloakroom. So....any ideas for a new kitchen layout? i guess it will be a galley kitchen but it will be quite wide. What sort of combination of units and where would you have them? We will have the washing machine in the utility room.

I don’t think you’ll be too far off with 50k + contingency. We’re having something very similar done in Cambridge (also not a cheap place for this kind of work) and our quotes for the build (including glazing, plumbing and electrics) are around the 50k mark. We’re extending out by 3m but our overall width is 7.5m so slightly narrower than yours. We’re also having 6m of bifolds across the back wall which aren’t cheap so if you’re not fussed about bifolds that might be a saving for you. I would get a couple of architects to quote you for doing the drawings. The quote should be free and they will usually have a good idea about how much it would cost to build. Tell them your budget and they should be able to advise what you can and can’t achieve. If they all say it will cost more than 50k then you haven’t actually spent any money so haven’t lost anything if you don’t proceed at that point.

Thanks for your responses it helps to hear other viewpoints we perhaps hadn't considered before. Daisy, we wanted to bring the downstairs wc into the heart of the house as the current location was effectively the old outhouse of the original house and using this area we'd lose access to the garden other than through the new open plan area. Base 2 - some helpful considerations there. We did actually consider your first point before we appointed an architect but he pointed out the practicalities as we'd lose access through the house from the garden to front of house via garage as we have no side access to our garden. You're right as we've only been here for just under a year but never put our cars in the garage and I doubt any of our neighbours use theirs for cars these days as would likely be too small for most cars. I think we'll probably end up with something similar to your 3rd option and lose some of the hallway space under the stairs. 88wj88 - thanks thats a useful point to consider. The utility is a bit of an awkward space as it's effectively a lean-to/passageway, we do want to make it more of a useful space rather than just a corridor but have to also consider the access practicalities it currently provides.
