How do I make this look better?
Comments (44)For a quick, easy and cheap facelift you'll be amazed how far a clean-up alone will go. Jet wash the wall and the driveway setts. Put a lick of paint on the ironwork, black would definitely be good. Brush in fresh kiln-dried sand between the setts. Prune back those sad looking shrubs before they get back into growth, which will be any time now. Don't cut back those firs, they will not grow back and are likely to just die. If you do anything at all with them, get rid and plant something which grows more happily in this country. It's a low definition photo so I can't see the state of the lawn or whether the wall needs re-pointing. Look yourself and treat accordingly. That alone will lift the place sufficiently to give you breathing space. Then you can think through what budget you have left and which of the many ideas available you prefer and can prioritise accordingly. On the other hand, whatever you do will not look good while all that looks scruffy and unloved....See MoreLayout advice on bathroom please
Comments (17)Hello Anna, This is approximately what I mean... Image shows bath in same spot but you could move it along to suit. They are on the same plane... I'm suggesting be more interesting with choices for things like storage etc... Screen could be longer too and perhaps think of a shelf built into the tiling so its not stuck on... Little wooden bench to sit on... Floor and ceiling tiles to create a seamless finish.. Wall hung basin and loo without vanity unit which I find a boring option. Build in towel shelving and storage into the fabric of the bathroom rather than add pieces... apart from little things like stool etc... Think of really fabulous finishes and fixtures.. Have a flat wooden "sleeper" for a under sink shelf - adding woods to marble or polished concrete screeds, or painted plaster is a gr8 way to introduce warm natural elements.. so you can create a "spa" feel and be ultra modern but different at the same time... : ))...See MoreArea around new inset stove - I could do with some advice!
Comments (18)Hi, the only thing I would say is put the fire on and see how hot it gets. We have a gas inserted fire, a little bit like yours but it really belts out the heat. We had an oak mirror on the wall above it and it got so hot we were really concerned that it would burn! We didn't want a full mantel piece so we bought an oak "shelf" to absorb the heat, then put the mirror above that. Now I am not worried about the mirror. I still have to switch the fire off after a couple of hours as the wood "shelf" gets really hot, but I am not worried that anything of value will get damaged. If the shelf gets a bit black (it hasn't so far) I won't mind. I definitely would not put a TV over a fire for all the above reasons. Hope that helps a little....See MoreAdvice Please! Comments (14)Hi Emily no I haven't actually done anything since first posting actually so still really eager for other people's opinions. That is actually the way it was when we viewed the house and I agree with you but it didn't make sense for our lifestyles. We use the dining table to work on the laptops and for sewing and need the daylight from the one window on the left hand side. Also in turn the right hand side is darker and more suitable for movie nights (we have lots). Contrary to the illustration, there are no windows on the wall where the front door is so even the current dining room can be really dark if it is an overcast day...See Moretamp75
