Hi , if you made the chimney breaks and in the opposite wall there is another section of wall that protrudes. Why don't you create a stripe using these two features? It could run like a track or something? A rail road? Or just a solid stripe that would help create a submissive divide? It could look quite cool if it ran over the ceiling. Just could make quite a cool feature? Or you could find a green if a similar colour to the stripe on the fireplace and continue that stripe in paint up the wall. You could then do the rest of the wall in a softer colour. So the stripe either continues straight up or creates a small pattern (a bit like on an etch a sketch)... If they like colouring why don't you use one wall as a giant chalk board so they have free reign? The deep green with a pale pink (don't panic about the pink and boys you maybe thankful for it:) on the tensing walls would look v cool in my view. If you did use a giant chalk board (you can get ones that act like a wallpaper that stick to the walls) the. Grey from it would sit nicely too. Primary colours are great too but you can end up with stimulation overload so be careful especially if they have their friends round! Cheers Lucy

Hi LTS, The sketch plan your architect has come up with is not what I would expect from a 'qualified' architect. If you didn't request a study why is it included? The dining table is orientated such that three of the eight seats do not allow a view of the garden but face the kitchen. The door to the utility room is in the wrong location which should be adjacent the kitchen and I'm not sure you need anything like the length of the utility room as shown. There could have been a little more thought given to structural matters at this stage - eg: the beam above kitchen will be large, expensive and cumbersome to install correctly. On the plus side the overall planning principles are OK - but the whole plan needs to be prepared to a larger scale (1:50) and to indicate clearly where each piece of furniture is to be placed and how the kitchen functions (worktop/cooker/worktop/sink sequence) before you make any commitments to the architect's proposal. Get into the whole detail of the plan now and avoid the headaches of having to alter designs as the work proceeds. There should be no charge from the architect for requesting this second stage work by the way. You should also insist on receiving an elevation and a section drawing at this stage together with a clear indication of how the extension will look when viewed from the garden and, most importantly what the architect thinks the whole of the work will cost and how long will it take. (If you have already received this information my apologies)

The first option seems to work better when you add furniture in? Given they'll be starting secondary school soon'ish I don't know whether a wardrobe and chest of drawers is a better option for their uniform? You can also use the bottom of the wardrobe for shoes, sports equipment etc and I'd pick a colour that blends into the wall. I personally wouldn't do 2 feature walls however use colour blocking to zone each of their spaces. Try and find a blue and yellow that work together and add a couple more complementary shades. I've added a couple of pics but there are loads online. You could do a geometric shape or border etc. Having their duvet in their colours may be an idea too. I would probably go for beanbags for seating which can go at the side of the bed when not in use. Is their room under the bed for baskets for toys? Maybe also shelves over the bedside table?
