1930's House facelift help please
Comments (29)Hey So the latest update is that we're still busy with the project but in the closing stages. We've done a lot of work inside more than originally planned we've gutted the house and replaced everything and changed the floor plan to modernise it and make more of an open plan space downstairs. We've done the rear extension which is now dedicated to kitchen with a central island running parallel with the doors . On the outside the house has had external insulation fitted and new render which makes it look new. I've attached some recent pics. Richard...See MoreIdeas to Modernise House Exterior
Comments (0)Hi if anyone has any ideas on how to Modernise the front of this house would be great to hear. I quite like the modern black aluminium windows and modern doors. I also like french window styles. We are also looking to create a small porch as the front door opens straight into the living room but don't want to take to much parking space away. We are also planning to landscape the drive to make it a clear drive. I've also added a picture of the door we like but am not sure wether it would suit the house....See MoreFew Ideas for this large 80s house & exterior modernisation, Input?
Comments (5)I think you need to look at the cost of the glass veranda as it is likely to be more expensive than the render that you say you can't afford. I am also not convinced it is going to look better because of the proposed flat roof on the bay- you could always get rid of the bay and have a plain window instead. Personally I think that you make the lounge lighter by adding light reflecting paving/ chippings/ pond outside the bay. You can also likely make the room feel lighter by changing the flooring in the room for paler. I really like the double front doors but glass doors would of course let in more light. I think replacing the digits and facials will make very little difference to the feel of the house and should be the last job you do not the first. If it were my house I would be more concerned about the windows above the front door. Personally I would perhaps have just one window here and if another window is necessary put in a velux above. Lastly you write about wanting to update the house.... do you like the style of this era.... if not perhaps you should be thinking about changing the window proportions or covering the brick even though this may not currently be in budget?...See MoreUnusual 1930s House Renovation Project - Ideas? Comments (17)Jonathan, AMB, thank you ever so much for your advice and designs! We had been toying with the idea of pulling the garage forward. Back in the early 2000s, planning permission was rejected for a double garage in the opposite corner of the driveway but a sensible solution would be to come forward next to the neighbouring property, no light issues and should not upset the 'street scene'. I've always been keen on moving the stairs but associated costs have dampened my spirits a little. That saying, in there current guise they are incredibly steep and dangerous for the young and elderly. A new configuration may well improve the landing space/flow on the first floor. I completely agree about the driveway, my initial thought was grasscrete but we'll never have more than two cars... if that. With us eventually getting some gates up, that could be quite an inviting space. I've been watching a lot of house shows and they always mention about being able to see the garden from the front entrance which you have captured in that floor plan. Phases of work is a strong debate and you are not wrong AMB. I guess once we have a final plan, the phase of the works should fall into place. The fireplace was a family heirloom of the previous owner, took it out his grandad's property apparently! In terms of decor, we want to embrace the character of the property with an added modern twist. We are very keen to incorporate a hallway for the very reasons you mentioned. Thanks again for your comments and suggestions, all very useful....See Moresadiya
