Advice on House Exterior

Hi,

I'd like to make the look of our new house more contemporary and I was considering dark grey fixed pane/picture windows - so just glass and an outer frame for all of the front windows and changing the slider to have a black front door.

I'm concerned that it might look wrong without any visible openings however....

Has anyone seen anything similar completed? I'd appreciate any views or opinions on whether this would work or if not, why not?

The first photo is the house currently and the pictures below are some of my inspiration!

love your idea of the grey windows...and definitely think it will make the house more contemporary. we are building a contemporary house at the moment.... another idea is creating a different finish on one part of the wall. you could think about doing that on the bay window at the front eg zinc or cement board - or wood cladding like the 3rd photo. one other idea would be to paint/change the finish on the 2 chimneys:-) good luck with it :-)

That is amazing - we went to look at the house 3 weeks ago and only found out afterwards that it was sale agreed. Good luck and have lots of fun making it your own. I'm sure lots of people would love to see how it works out. Personally I like the appearance of your house more than the others you posted, even though I do see that it needs some changes. I would think about sash and cord windows personally.

Thanks, Donut. It has taken a long time, but we are finally getting towards the end. We decided to play it safe in the end, and installed hardwood sash windows that come factory spray painted in a warm white. They look really lovely, but now in contrast, the exterior render looks so awful that we will have to do that now! (Bit back to front as this should have been done before the windows, but things don't always work out as they should!). Also, keep meaning to remove that nasty little black plant pot which I only ever seem to notice on photos...

Hi Ciara I love the idea of full height doors for the garage conversion but would consider the practicality of it, think about where the desk will go. It will not add to pavement appeal if the desk is against the glass and you can see the messy bits that tend to gather under a desk. Crittal style steel windows are exorbitantly expensive, but I agree with Jonathan the house lends itself to multi paned windows. You might want to look at good quality PVC options. I would suggest the roof gets a jet wash as the green moss should come off and reveal the colour of the roof.

I like the house but I agree it needs plants to soften it and make it look less like a garage forecourt. You have gravel beds under the window. Why don’t you make a start there? You could keep the gravel as a mulch. I cannot see the front boundary but if you don’t have plants there then that would also be a good place to improve the view from inside. Ease yourself in gently by tackling one area at a time. If you are not a gardener then a good garden centre can advise and maybe refer you to a garden designer who will draw up a planting plan.

Hi, I think that you could give this house a smart contemporary look with the grey windows that you suggested. I would break each window up into two or three panels though, this would give each panel a more elegant vertical emphasis. A timber front door is always nice though, the image above shows one of our houses with a similar hip-roofed style and grey frames (the windows here are openable too). It is good to match the window frame colour to the gutters and/or eaves fascia & soffit. In this house we had an iroko timber door and eaves which brings a warm high quality feel to the house.
