Lighting advice - zoning the space

Hi,

We are about to start build on a kitchen extension to create a kitchen/diner/lounge. My dilemma is how via lighting we zone each of the areas. For dining areas the usual advice is 1 or three pendants but the dining table is likely to move from time to time. Any advice on how to light and zone these spaces much appreciated.

I tend to like a pendant over the dining table too, maybe a light like the flos string would allow you the flexibility to install a light which could be moved.

I would be inclined to use a mix of lighting provision, from pendants where you plan to locate the dining table plus over the island to wall uplighters, spots in 2-3 clusters and unit lighting. Ensure switches at at each door entry point and lights can be controlled individually in their respective zones.

I would always recommend if the budget allows consulting with a lighting designer to get the most out of the space; I would highly recommend Sam Coles who you can find on Houzz.

I'm doing all I can to stop it from crashing but no luck yet! I've lengthened the island from 3.2M to 3.6M to increase the storage for the kitchen but agree the island should be moved down slightly. I'd like a really large seating area but will have a play around to see how I can make this area work better as the settee is a little bit close to the island! I've always wanted a formal seating area and will have the space to do this but may be able to get away with 2 settees rather than the 3 I had my heart set on!! I'd put the TV on that wall so I could see it when I was in the kitchen cooking! But it would be better placed on the other wall for people sat at the Island to see. Your points are so helpful! This is the most productive day I've had in a while!! And I've just watched the George Clarke show 'Ugly House to Lovely House' to see the Crittall windows and I love them!

Hi, As a plasterer I'd just like to add that you may have to get the artex tested for asbestos before removing. Don't be tempted to do it yourself just incase! Ask your builder/plasterer how he intends to remove it to check his knowledge. Products can. ow be bought that are painted on and these soften it enabling it to be scraped off easily. Also be prepared to lose up to 150mm down from your existing ceiling depending on how it's specified to be insulated. You'll need a gap between your tiles and felt and the new insulation (this will prevent moisture tracking to the new plaster) then insulation between the roof timbers and then a layer of insulation covering all of this. Then you will have the plasterboard screwed into the timber. I hope I haven't put you off the whole idea now. Good luck with the project!

Appreciate the responses :) The sofas are all from DFS, I believe the top one was the Zelda:- https://www.dfs.co.uk/zelda/zel13alrl?origin=All_Leather_Sofas If I could get a chair and footstool from DFS with the sofa that would make a good combination although I’m happy to buy from anywhere tbh (just thinking it would be easier getting everything in one delivery). The IKEA chair comes in a couple of different colours, I also liked the turquoise finish but not sure if that would be too much and still go with the tan sofa. I like some of the ideas in the photos so that you for liking them (the layering they done really make it feel multidimensional and like a lived in space) although I’ve never been confident enough to use a patterned rug! As far as colours go I’ve started to lean towards off-whites, warm neutrals, greys, yellows and blues, would these be able to work in conjunction with a tan sofa and each other (grey/blue/yellow as accent colours with the off-whites and warmer neutrals as the main staples of the room). Also what do people generally think when it comes to electronics (TV, Soundbar, Home Assistant), is it better to go with black or white coloured items?

The main thing is to get clear on what you need and want from each of these rooms - how you want to use them and what the flow needs to be from one space to another for you to be able to enjoy living in your home with ease. Although not directly related to light fittings, have you considered other aspects to the renovation such as lighting control, music systems?
