I have no say in what happens in the loft library... unless I want to take a book to read, he wouldn't even let me dust the place (not that I'd offer to dust it, anyway :)) I managed to insert a vase and a few prints on top of the bookcases in his office, but as he's buying 4-5 books a week, they're probably have to be moved to make space for these new books. Knowing the pattern from our last house, soon we'll have to have more shelves/ bookcases bought or built. Hmmm... who knew living with a bibliophile will prove rather difficult?

Hi Minnie 101 - This was taken yesterday, pre bookcase when I was experimenting with the various design permutations ;) I will update tomorrow (hubby is forcing me to get some sleep) with pics of the art work hung up. The wall colour is interesting as it looks so different all the time. It is dulux's Jurassic Stone. But looks green, olive, grey, mint, etc during different times of the day. I absolutely love the colour!

I would use mdf in the pic below I have used a softwood edging around al the shelving to give a better finish on the edges when painted the doors I have inset within so the edges are not on show.

MDF and softwood is fine. Ideally mdf should be edged or treated with shellac to prevent fluffy finish. However, the look is in the considered detail. There are several things you need to note on the one you like which will make all the difference to a good design.

1. The increased thickness of the shelves and cabinet uprights.

2. The door frame thickness should be in ratio to its width otherwise it will look too meagre

3. The inset moulding will be better as a belechion moulding to prevent visible cracking in the paintwork on the softwood. ( sometimes used with fielded panels )

4 Where possible it is better to use the existing skirting detail as the kick-plate all around the design to meet up with the existing skirting

5. In this design 'laid on' doors would give an inferior look to inset doors with hinge butts. Unfortunately the doors have to be square and plumb for this to work ,which may challenge some carpenters.

6. The handles should suit the design and should not be placed at the top of the door .

7. The correct crown moulding and working top edging, although not immediately noticeable will make all the difference.

I love this look and have similar in my lounge, I showed a joiner what I wanted and he built it, I think it was thick MDF type for the cabinet but he used wood for the shelves above, around half an inch thick. You wouldn't want the shelf to bow, not a good look. Find a good joiner and he should be able to advise.

MDF will have a price advantage but, as other have said, care needs to be taken with painting and to ensure structurally they are designed to minimise the risk of bowing. If money permitted, I would look to a solid or "staved" wood - ultimately it should be stronger, last longer and the grain is, in my opinion, more pleasing aesthetically.

I second the recommendation to invest in a good joiner - spend a little more now for a quality job that eill last a lifetime!
