Curtain pole help - very limited space above window

Hi,

Some of the windows in our Victorian house have a very small gap between the top of the wooden window frame and the ceiling. In some cases, the coving fills this gap completely so there is no flat wall to fix a curtain pole to above the window.

We've considered roman blinds or shutters, but would love curtains if at all possible. Has anyone seen any fixings that would allow this, or have they solved a similar problem in a different way?

Perhaps a ceiling mounted curtain track or top fixed/ceiling fixed curtain poles will be a good solution

As Carolina says look at ceiling mounted tracks. I have one as it fits around my bay window.

The height of the rail above the window is developing into a bit of a hot topic, so here’s my hat in the ring. For heavy curtains or wide curtains with lots of material, the pole needs the strength of screw fixings provided by screwing into the concrete lintel above the window. If the wall is a stud wall, the pole needs to hit the wooden batons in the wall and this can determine where you can screw the pole to the wall, hence giving you less choice on pole position or you are relying on cavity fixings alone to take the weight of the curtains and pole. Mounting it high above the window may miss the lintel and the pole may only work with lightweight voiles and be far more likely to fall off wall as mountings fail with time ( hence comments by others of damaged plaster). The baton allows you to fix the pole at any point above the window as the baton is screwed into the batons inside the stud wall and the curtain pole fittings can be screwed anywhere along the baton. Your photos show more traditional brick and plaster walls? This gives the option of no baton if your fixings are into the brickwork with raw plugs and not just in crumbling plaster. The height is up to you. BUT have you found your ideal curtains yet? A smart choice of height would be to ensure the standard full length curtain lengths will work with your pole. Otherwise you will have to have more expensive made to measure curtains to ensure the full length curtains you love will skim the floor. We have bought the curtains we love in the past and used them to guide pole height to ensure they looked fantastic. Of course on the design options on full length curtains meeting the floor is another minefield - skimming, touching or pooling ....... good luck!

Shutters are a classic, timeless look that goes well with various interiors. I found a few client photos with windows similar to yours. We had another client who opted for a boxed pelmet with pinch pleate curtains which could work with your window. It creates a very clean and elegnt look. Plus voiles for extra privacy but still allows light in. Similar but with a voile curtain To save on costs you can forgo the pelemt box, pinch pleats or eyelets look stylish as is.

Have you considered shutters? They give a real ‘wow’ factor and really make a feature of both rectangular and bay windows. You said your bay window looks out on the back garden. With shutters you can adjust the louvres to allow as little or as much ‘view-through’ into the garden. They would also give the privacy you need in a bedroom, as well as making the room dark enough for sleeping when the louvres are completely closed. You said you’re not changing the structural element of the room or the windows. By having shutters within the apertures, they would not get in the way of any cupboards or other modifications you might eventually make to the room. Another asset of shutters is that it doesn’t matter if windows are at different heights. Having the same product across all windows in a space creates a lovely considered and unified look. Also, when windows are above radiator (as in your square bay) and you have long curtains, you tend to lose heat behind the curtains. As shutters are insulating and fitted above the radiator, they can be used to reflect the radiator heat into your room. In a nutshell, shutters create a lovely aesthetic look in a room. You don’t need to dress the windows in any other way as they are a wow factor in their own right. Shades of white will make the room appear even larger. I think long curtains would be lovely. What an elegant room. A metal rail would be good, forget about those ghastly plastic ones that eventually break. I had a simple white metal rail fitted in my bay window. I actually bought it in a high quality curtain shop and they fitted it for me. Cost £200 for rail, fitting and open/close cords - rail is 12’ long. There are a huge array of fabrics on the market but I love a linen mix, hangs beautifully. You could go plain in a colour similar to your walls, or a pattern. It depends what else is in the room as to how patterned you go! Do you like florals, or geometric? Hi. I think you should be able to fit a pelmet. This is my house before we moved in which has the same issue. There's another window not in shot which actually reaches the ceiling rather than just a tiny gap. I've just got Roman blinds up now and want to add dress curtains later. I unfortunately don't know the names of the various fittings you can get for dress curtains though as have spent ages looking myself! You can get modern pelmets and they weren't too badly priced from memorŷ. I also spoke to a local curtain maker who could also make pelmets so it might be worth asking if you do like them if you want the fabric matched

Unfortunately my old iPad died and I lost all my curtain photos which took me ages to find! However for dress curtains I'm looking at something like this pole but shorter and in an L shape (similar to a bay kit) so the pole is fitted into the wall rather than window frame. Maybe add pics of the top of your Windows though

I would agree top fix rail could be a nice solution. Although, depending on your windows a roman blind could work really well too, the architrave around your windows could be a beautiful frame around your blind.
