Congratulations on getting such a beautiful first apartment. I'd definitely start with a sofa and 2 chairs, and NOT a loveseat! A lot of us houzzers are anti-loveseat. Two chairs offer so much more flexibility than a loveseat. I'd place the sofa on the wall opposite the fireplace. The two chairs would go in the window with a small table between them. You said you wanted a "big old sofa". I hope that was just a figure of speech as what I think you'd be far better off with is a sofa that is of a nice size, but not too big. I'd look for one with skinny arms so that you have more seating space which is what a sofa is for, after all! A sofa that is 84" long will fit in most homes nicely. Watch the depth of the sofa too as lots of them have gotten far too deep. I'd go 39" deep max. Remember that this is your first apartment, but not your last so stick with pieces that aren't too big. Pay attention to the size of the chairs also. I'd stay under 35" wide, and again with narrow arms. My recommendation would be solid fabrics for both the sofa and the chairs. You can have fun with pattern when you get around to a rug and pillows. You'll also need a coffee table, plus a table to go between the two chairs. I adore the faceted mirror table from West Elm below and would make it a must have. The coffee table below with the marble top is lovely as long as you don't spill red wine on it! So, a few thoughts on the bathroom. Sorry, it's a bit of a read, but I have tried to keep it as short as possible ;) 1. I would not choose to spray paint the fixings/armatures, mainly as it would not work (or if, be costly), but also because spraying them gold would make your bathroom even more yellow-y; the cool silver tone of the fixings actually sets off the beige somewhat. So what I think you'd want to do is counterbalance the yellow with another colour, as someone else pointed out. This could be in the realm of blue, as it's complimentary to yellow and will balance it. But I think you could also balance the beige-y-ness with more white (or cream), as found in the ceiling. Which leads to the 2nd question. You could have some paneling put round the bath, there are aqua panels and suchlike, but I would advise make sure a really good tradesperson does the job, so you get it expertly done. It does not hurt to get some estimates and opinions in, to get an idea of what it would cost you. This also leads onto - 3. as it really depends on your budget, how much you change in the bathroom. If you are planning long-term, I'd say it's better to spend a bit more and do a proper makeover, but if the expense would not be justified, stick to a few amendmends to make it comfortable for the time being. You could think about changing the bath for a walk-in shower, for instance and have the floor re-tiled, or finished with another material in a light colour, which would free up space and also balance out the surrounding beige. This way you could also have more storage beside the sink area. If you don't want to loose the bath, you could just have the floor done, I'd say that tiling would be prefereable to painting it - or you could lay vinyl or some other flooring; either of the flooring choices should not be massively expensive, as it is only a small area. 4. Handles can be changed, but I could also suggest changing the whole unit. You could also swap the mirror cabinet for a wall-hung mirror, which would alleviate the awkwardness at the sink (I've seen that so many times!) and instead hang a bathroom cupboard next to it - possibly also open shelving. 5. As to 5. that depends what you'd want to use it for and would require a bit more in-depth analysis. 6. See 1. I would recommend very light, neutral colours, accented by some lush green plants - they always make everything look nicer! But it also depends on your personal taste and what colours you like. As mentioned before, blues and teals would work well, look for something cool in tone to counterbalance the warm beige, but also trust your gut feeling if you see something you like the look/feel of, as it will probably be right for you! Hi, Reviving a bit of an old post here with some more thoughts. I agree with everyone that the sofa is probably best looking onto the window but having given it a try it makes the TV pretty much not visible unfortunately. I can't think of anywhere that I could place the TV that would give a good angle for the sofa in that position. (Other than pulling it out from the wall and angling it, which looked pretty poor when I tried it) Open to suggestions though. I may just have to move the sofa back a little to create slightly more room for chairs. I think if I put it right up against the wall the space will possibly be too big for conversation. In the end I've actually grown to like the eames chair and chesterfield combo so will just add one more chair now. either on the same side as the current chair or two chairs facing each other at different sides of the sofa. :) @Emily - The dinning table is further away from the kitchen in the window thats true. The alternative I think would be to shift everything up towards the bay window more and put the dinning table at the other end of the room. I think that might look a little odd since the fireplace is in the centre?
