In our opinion they serve no purpose other than make people think their dishes are draining. Whats more, especially on lighter colour stone they can discolour. Leave them out entirely and get yourself a Franke rollamat instead - much more practical. a recess drainer will also do the job although i don't really like the look of them.

The room which we would most likely refer to as a 'snug' (if at all) is 7.5 m x 4.5 m - which is the size of a living room to some people, but it's the cosiest and snuggest of the two rooms and where we spend most time watching telly etc. So I agree that it's all a matter of perspective.

I think there are other options which would save the garden access and keep costs down by avoiding the side extension. Here's an example - have inverted the image so that the layout is the same as yours. But it all comes down to your list of priorities - looks like you want doors opening into front room and to keep the kitchen in existing position (to cut costs I assume) - but if those things are actually not that important then you have other options. I do prefer A for the bigger open space, but the compromise is the lack of kitchen storage (but maybe it's ok compared to what you have?). B has pantry but then the little seating area becomes the thoroughfare to the kitchen - and it'll feel more closed off coming in front door (can be good to not see right through house, but usually people like a long view to garden). I don't think getting to the toilet from the garden is that difficult in B, just need to walk through the extension, and it's easier to access from inside the house (and it's much bigger than the tiny one in A).

Turn dining room into cozy sitting room, add log stove to existing fireplace and assume french doors to orangery are not usually used. Get structural engineer's advice about how much of the wall between the current living room and kitchen you can safely remove then get the sledge hammers in. Remove all of kitchen and pantry, add insulating internal doors to access orangery. 3 Put kitchen units down both sides of current living room, old kitchen (possibly with chimney retained or steel columns) will be a small dining area for winter use. Conservatory / orangery can then be open to this area for the mild weather or closed off in mid winter. The flow from front door to kitchen - dining - conservatory will be along clear sight lines and would not feel so 'busy'. Retiring to the cosy sitting room would be just off the main hall. The restored privacy means It could also double as a guest bedroom. Upstairs, I would turn the smallest bedroom into a large bathroom, look into keeping the loo as an ensuite to the left bedroom (although does this plumbing go internal to the conservatory?). Anyway good luck with it.
