Concrete floors - love it or leave it?

Got to agree with radicalman - there are actually a lot of downsides to a concrete floor. Because they're so brittle and hard they are almost guaranteed to crack - they're also very cold and unforgiving underfoot. We offer a poured resin that is just 3-4mm thick and is so similar looking to concrete a lot of people can't tell the difference. Essentially we pour two pigments at the same time and blend them so you get the same finish/effect - but it's warm, smooth, soft (elastic) and really comfortable so you can walk around your home/kitchen etc. barefoot without worrying about it! Aesthetically though I love a polished concrete floor - such a great blank canvas for any style as it complements contemporary interiors and provides a really interesting contrast with more traditional styles! If you want a warmer finish (in a taupey grey or warmer pigment) that's also possible and stops it looking too industrial...

Hi Adam, I think you've got two options but I think moving the toilet when you've got neighbours is going to be painful so I'd try and keep it in place as much as possible. Option 1. I like Marks suggestion of swapping the reception and bed 1. Keep the bathroom and knock through up to the fireplace (also could cause headaches in a flat). This would mean you could run the kitchen around the walls to the stairs. You could also move the bathroom door to bed 1 to stop the kitchen being a thoroughfare. Option 2 Jonathans idea ish of keeping the bathroom, kitchen becomes utility/store and you make the existing reception your new kitchen, diner, sitting. This is a similar size to my living space and it fits really nicely for a 2 bed. This has multiple benefits of having the room separated from the bedrooms for sound reasons, also looks like there is a pretty window out. Thanks for the feedback arc3d! To the both of you, So the two woods I wanted was - Solid Wood American Black Walnut (attached) for the lower ground floor and Solid Grey Wood (not sure of species but colour attached) for the second/bedroom floor. Firstly what do you both think of the two contrasts? I started to read up on Dark Woods vs Light Woods and it seems like given that my living room space is small that installing Dark Wood in the room will make it look even smaller and that I should opt for a lighter wood. Thoughts? I am looking to go for a modern and minimalistic look where I would prefer that most of the house walls are going to be white and the most adventurous I get is having one stand out feature wall e.g. for a bedroom, imagine three of the four sides of bedroom are white with a grey wood floor, and the fourth wall side may either be a very dark charcoal grey or a midnight blue with curtains to match the feature colour. e.g. in the case of the living room, we never use electric fireplace. My thoughts were to remove it and tile the chimney breast with brick tiles (see image below) and fill the blank space with logs or something like that. Like a nature vibe. I don't want too much going on in each room other than the odd stand out and good furnishings. Given the size of the house and rooms, is it best to opt out of the walnut ground floor and go with a colour like the one Sonia posted above and then have the grey wood on the second floor? I am not heavily inclined to go one way and am completely open to suggestions. I just want to get this right the first time so I never have to revisit it again.
