Real wood v laminate worktop

Currently looking at Howdens kitchen (Fairford) in Cashmere. I like the look of real wood oak block style worktops but don't like the idea of the maintenance involved. Any views on good quality laminate ? Will it spoil the look of the kitchen? Should I forget wood all together and go with quartz or a composite worktop ? All comments greatly appreciated as don't want to get this wrong.

Avoid fake wood. Even if you're taken by the look initially, areas of heavy wear or scratches give the lie to the deception.

Hi everyone No decisions yet, its effectively like an insurance job so we are still waiting on a decision. I would love hardwood flooring but the supplier doesn't stock hardwood only laminate, carpet and vinyl. I'd like to put the same in both affected rooms (dining room currently carpeted and kitchen currently vinyl) and also in the den which is next to the kitchen so it seems like the laminate might be our best option. No karndean/Amtico type options either. In an ideal world we would have the hardwood but then we would have to make a contribution to the cost. Normally not a problem but I am leaving my job as a partner in a large law firm this week to set up on my own (very scary!) and so we are tightening the purse strings for a few months in case things don't work out!

I just wanted to share my experience because I am on a non existent budget too. I saw a picture of a bench I loved, contacted the carpenter, and he has just made me a birch ply kitchen for a total of 1600 euros, including fitting. (600 labour, 400 fitting, 600 for materials). He has kept his price low for me because he likes the project. I am guaranteed to use him now to build wardrobes, boxes, and shelving solutions as and when I have budget. Sometimes talking to individuals who work for themselves/do it on the side can result in very cost-effective solutions! I am paying 300 euros for brushed stainless steel countertops, and got a belfast sink for 100 euro including the mixer tap. Will send u a pic when it's done but my almost dream kitchen has been possible for like 2000 euros (£1800?) I wouldn't shy away from painting the units yourself as there are many tutorials online to show you how, but it is labour-intensive and eggshell paint on cabinets = drips!! You could always just get white or raw cabinets for now, and paint later when you have some cash? Make sure you use quality brushes if you go this route. Nothing more annoying than little hairs sticking in your lovely paint :-/

Lol panacotta, well I think I could stretch to once every two years :) Thank you! Ruby Who - Oh dear, was it damage by the sink? AJ Interiors - (Helpful as ever! I received my scrubbing brush already :) I don't chop on surfaces anyway. I just wonder why they can't be glazed or laminated like my dining table. Going to speak to the chippy about that! Another vote for Dekton and Sileston Quartz worktops, use them all the time in our projects as so much more forgiving and low maintenance than granite or marble. Agree that Corian is a good option if you have a large island to prevent visible joins, whilst it has other benefits you do need to be very careful when it comes to heat. Vast range of colours and textures in all types nowadays so the type of material shouldn't limit the effect you want to achieve - be that traditional or contemporary. I am always a big advocate that a worktop is an investment, there is no point spending a large sum on a beautiful quality kitchen and then finishing it off with a worktop that won't stand up to time as well as the rest of the room or cheapen the look - I always recommend to go for the best you can afford.

There will be a difference in price between Quartz and laminate worktops so I guess it's down to budget. What I would say is don't buy your worktops from Howdens. They are cheap and don't have a balancer fitted underneath them causing them to possibly warp in time.

Look at some of the better well known brands for laminate worktops such as Axiom, Prima, Egger (Bushboard and Formica products). If you look after them they'll look after you. They can last years.

I had a new kitchen fitted last year from diy kitchens, who are marvellous .
I know I’m not to be trusted with real wood, I spill everything! So for my breakfast bar I used (shock horror!) B&Q Arlington oak laminate breakfast bar. I even bought a real oak worktop to compare, and preferred the B&q one.
