@ Man about the house - thanks for the picture - that's really useful to see it with the pale paint behind the woodburner. I had thought about doing the whole room, especially as it will be used as our snug but we have double glazed doors leading through to the main living space which is painted white. I think it might look a little odd against the pale colour elsewhere if I do it all dark. I can see how the brick slips would contrast nicely but I'm not keen on red brick. Our main materials in the house are oak, slate & glass so don't really want to add in another material but thanks for the thought. Actually quite like the pink! Want to add some pink tones in somewhere but not sure I'm brave enough for that... Great to have some ideas outside of my very 'safe' way of thinking. One dark wall is a brave move for me!

(A) painting an alcove a particular colour that pleases you. (B) Having the Island section a different colour. (C) A decorative blind adds a spark. I am not specifying 'the colour' or 'the fabric design', they are just ideas to assist. (D) Imagine using an idea like this as a splash-back, it acts as a work of art - there are many interresting tile ideas.

Couldn’t say if the grey putty would match you’re soft furnishings. I’d get some colour cards and testers first and look at in both daylight and under artificial light, you’d be surprised at how much light can affect colour, especially with greys and neutrals. You could always use the Dulux or Valspar colour cards in B&Q and if you find a reasonable match then either go a couple of shades lighter or darker which will make the soft furnishings stand out better. As for fire surround, use a water based multi surface primer (doesn’t matter which brand), and 2-3 top coats of quick dry satin or eggshell. Just looked at Crown non drip satin and “milk white” seems like a good off white. If possible remove the surround before painting, looks like it should just lift off the wall. Hope this helps.

I did a large sample piece on my walls with Wevet before buying a 5L tin. Mine doesn’t look any different at any time of the day and I sincerely hope when I do the rest of my kitchen it doesn’t show out as pink. It must be the lighting making it show the pink. Edit: I’ve just enlarged the images and mine is nothing like yours. Very strange.
