I live with a similar view just outside Canterbury, Kent. We are surrounded by farmland and while wanting to blend the garden in to the landscape I designed the borders with a naturalistic stance - this does mean including various types of grasses such as molinia, deschampsia, stipa and calamagrostis, which in themselves stand proud, but also have the canny nack of blending plants and colours to form a cohesive look. It also helps bring the landscape in to the garden, especially in the autumn and the winter, when their tan colours match similar colours on the horizon. I do not believe that grasses have had their time. If used properly, they just become part of the overall design. Do think vertically as well as horizontally, and to give a 'modern' style/approach do not use sweeping shapes for borders (these are used a lot for cottage style gardens with space): keep them straight with angles - the naturalistic planting will blur the otherwise sharp edges. Please feel free to look at my website marklanedesigns.com and look at the recent 'Bramling' garden in the portfolio. This was similar to my own garden, but had to include a swimming pool, which is always challenging. Excellent plants to use include: helenium, echinacea, echium russicum, aster (symphyothricum) umbellatus, vernonia, lythrum, baptisia, as well as cotinus, euphorbia. Think primarily herbaceous but keep the planting simple. Not necessary in big blocks which mirror the early gardens in the naturalistic/prairie styles but in terms of repetition throughout the borders. Use a single type of plant as a dot plant throughout - very similar to how plants self-seed in the wild. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please feel free to get in touch.

First the good news - terraces are brilliant and make for a really interesting garden space. The bad news is that the rendering looks to be a fairly poor job; see the edges not finished properly - opening the render up to premature decay. Damp is accumulating at back of steps because they do not have a forward gradient for run off, visible lines of block work underneath probably means that no scratch coat was applied before the top coat, so cracks like those on the top wall may well spread. Also I cant see any drainage holes in the walls, so damp might build up behind them and this might be the cause of the paint peeling on the middle steps. The tiles/slabs that have been placed on top of them are not really coping stones - so you will always get dirty water run off marks where the the pointing gaps are between them. Proper coping can be butted up very tightly so there is no joint for the water run down, also they have a drip grove underneath so that water cannot run back via surface tension down the walls. Depending on how seriously you want to make this a quality garden that will last for years you need to decide if you'd like to make the structural aspects thoroughly sound, before thinking about colours of walls, btw, If you paint the walls a dark colour it will make the garden feel smaller imo, otherwise you could plant and landscape and be faced with crumbling render ruining it. I'd get the ivy off of the fence on the left, it is making the space in the foreground feel much smaller and may be obscuring a rotten fence. You can get summerhouses with the shed bit built onto the back - accessed by a side door, which would preserve your route to back gate. Even better - commission a bespoke structure to make the most of your space. I'd ditch the grass (hassle to mow in restrained spaces, hauling mower up and down) and have seating/hammock areas on each terrace using lots of diaphanous plants like Phyllostachys and Genista aetnensis, Psuedopanax, grasses, or columnar plants. I'd freeform plant (without 'borders') through aggregate mulch - slate/gravel base augmented with drifts of cobbles/flints/shells ect. Sorry for the ramble but thorough assessment of structure before the fun bits can pay off.

Garden rescue is my favourite program at the moment and the Rich brothers just used three staghorn sumacs in a garden and they looked fab. I thought they would manage well in the raised beds with their shallow roots. I know they do sucker but I’ve had them in many gardens and never had an issue. Peachypear many of them only get to three metres high and my philosophy regarding trees is loppers and pruning saw are my best friends.

Hello, new is always bright and, sometimes, not great but after a few weeks of rain it should dull down the brightness. I have a question - the deck looks very narrow - only seating width 2 persons? Why didn't they take it out to the edge of the dark green mound picture 3? Picture 2 - I would suggest getting some pretty aggregate and making a pathway between the fence and the deck BUT I would seal up the sides of the decking and even concrete the ground under it (or at least put something over the bare earth) to use as storage area (presumably this hasn't been done). I'm going to probably make people comment on this but with a garden like yours I would have taken it down in levels/ terraces (removing the soil for possible use later) and built retaining walls and steps and having a semi-circular stone terrace at the house end if possible (round end facing away from the house) and another at the bottom end (round end facing the house). However, you have what you have so.... you can paint the wood and why not put a board at the road (?) side of the decking (Pic. 3-4) so people cannot see you eating/drinking/sleeping :-) if this is'nt possible then add a curtain of some sort around the whole area so you cannot be seen by neighbours. If the width of the decking is wide enough, and I'm not sure it is looking at the layout, then suggest planting small conifers in pots (or troughs) around the edges of the decking and once these are established and grown to approximately the height of the pergola roof the trail lights through them and around the frame work For a quick and immediate "FIX" get some trellis with artificial ivy, or similar, and attach it to the pergola on the street side - lots of companies offer Artificial Extendable Trellis Hedge Screening - check out the internet or your local garden centre. It will look very pretty, very quickly once the newness has worn off and, almost certainly by summer depending on the weather. Another quick question - did the builders seal the wood? Thompson Morgan
