wood floor joints

Hello
I’d love to have real hardwood throughout the ground floor of our terrace house (lounge, hallway, kitchen) but it’s impractical for us.
I love the look and want to do real hardwood in the lounge & hallway and wood effect porcelain in the kitchen- will that look terrible? There will be two stairs separating the two floors. Any ideas? Should they be different layouts? Totally different colours or try to match? Or avoid entirely?
Any pictures would be awesome!

Hello,

I hope the attached pictures may be useful. One of our customers used our Aged Oak Porcelain tiles in their kitchen and cloakroom for practicality and used oak wood flooring in their hallway and dining room. The hallway and dining room both ran on to the kitchen, so the two were sitting next to each other. As you can see in the pictures, it works pretty well! They just had a wooden threshold separating the two, but if you have stairs separating them, then I don't see why it would be a problem.

I tested white porcelain with bright pink hair dye when I bought them for my kitchen and the dye just wiped off. In 7 years the white tiles have never stained. I've dropped a Le Crueset cast iron pan lid and the lid got damaged but not a mark on the tile. I've had some small chips at the edges when furniture has been moved over them but it is minimal damage and the furniture should have been lifted rather than scrapped across the floor. You can buy full bodied porcelain which where the colour of the tile is right throughout the whole tile and if you get chips, you should not see a variation in colour. I love porcelain and would not use ceramic after having it. The best place to go for it, is your local independent tile retailer, rather than the big stores like Topps and Tile Giant. Not all tilers are keen on fixing them it because they are harder to cut and drill than ceramics and they need diamond blades and bits which cost more. They are well worth the investment though.

Thanks Angela, I'm aware of the mat and ply, I'm more after advice regarding expansion joints etc and how to make them not so obvious and where they are needed inside and out and what's required on the join between suspended and concrete? Sorry I should have been clearer. Thanks.

If considering wood you could get unfinished wood installed. Companies such as Wood Floor Accessories are a great supplier. Having it finished on site means a finish can be picked that works for your home. Each home has variables such as pets, different traffic and the owners desire to maintain the flooring or aversion to maintenance. Having wood finished on site has advantages. You can pick the highest quality product that works for your budget. The range of finishes available is quite wide. A professional company will try to understand your home and recommend the appropriate finish. They will also understand how easily the finish was can be renovated in the future. Amtico is an extremely robust product but being plastic, is just plastic flooring. It has its place, as does wood. In areas that have plenty of light surfaces, scratches show very easily on Amtico, Karndean etc. The manufacturers push a polishing maintenance product on consumers. However, this needs to be stripped and reapplied on a regular basis.

Saw this jointing in Leeds Castle which looks awesome. Anyone know a practical way to implement it, I don't necessarily need the random planks that Leeds has - but there must be a way to get the joint effect without actually hand making each one fitted to each plank. I'm thinking inlay butterflys after fitting with jigs to cutout for a router after the floor is laid? I guess it would need to be solid timber, maybe engineered flooring with some experimentation.
