Tile pattern and layout help needed please

Help the porcelain tile I like seems to only come in a 600 x 600, which I'm wondering might be too small for my large open plan layout. I would prefer 600 x 900 or 600 x 1200 as I prefer a rectangular look laid out like a brick work style.

with the square, i've seen a variety of laying patterns, is it more contemporary to lay them next to each other, ie. no overlap?

Also is 600 x 600 deemed to be quite a small tile? Just worried about too many grout lines everywhere..

Hello,

I've attached some pictures below which hopefully will help your decision. The first two images are of our Cement Porcelain. It's 750x750 in size, so a little larger than the tiles you are looking at, but it shows how the tiles would look laid in a square size to give you an idea of layout.

The second image shows our Super White Matt Porcelain laid in 600x600 - unfortunately, we don't have any pictures of it in the kitchen, but this shows the size of tile you're looking at.

The final two images show a limestone tile, but the first is laid in 600x600 and the second laid in 600x900. I thought it would be useful for you to see the same tile laid in different sizes so that you can compare and see which size you prefer.

Thanks Sophie, we finally bought the 600 x 600 as we loved it do much, with similar colour grout I think it would be fine. what are your thoughts on the grout? We are doing an inside floor and flowing into the outside patio with the same porcelain stone, except one is an outdoor rougher finish. But... we've been told that the laying of the stone outdoor needs a 4mm grout line minimum, preferably 5mm for outside, but the inside we were hoping for 2 or 3, but then it will look like its a mistake, and different if the grout sizes are different and the tiles wont obviously line up.. so now we're not sure how to lay them, either next to each other, or in a brick tile fashion, and now what do we do about grout? Same inside and out maybe a 4mm for both, or smaller inside and larger outside? This is all Too confusing, what do most people do?.. we're also not sure if we need expansion joints anywhere else? We currently have them at the join (between ply and concrete base) and doorways, but not sure if needed anywhere else? we have a good strong flat base, and de coupling matt too and flexible adhesive is that enough? Apologies so many questions..

Hi Katie. I do like the furniture you've chosen, as I said previously I would personally struggle to arrange furniture on a flat ŵall without corners, alcoves etc! I think it might be an idea to create a new post so others may be encouraged to respond without reading through previous comments. It may potentially work if you were to move the tv unit to the right. Have a floor lamp to the left of the unit and the chair angled in front of the lamp. Perhaps have a long piece of art or set of 2/3 to the right of the tv with maybe a plant stand or something and then the chinese cabinet. Do play around with the height of things though. I know you've looked before but I really think you need an area rug to zone the living space. Re kitchen not sure of your current thoughts but have you thought of a peninsular coming off that right ŵall within the kitchen? If you were to move the dining table perhaps a couple of accent chairs and table for the bay to keep your husband happy?!

I think plan2 looks/works best but i'd suggest a few changes. For the tower run, having only a 20mm filler is to tight and doors open more than 90 degrees so they'll be rubbing at the freezer end, i'd suggest changing the 600 and 800 larders to a 1200 breakfast style larder, having drawers and worktop inside, shelved above and power for toaster etc, the doors can be pocket style so they open then slide down the sides out of the way when in use, make the wall nib a bit wider by about 100mm so you have 50-70mm fillers at each end, probably bring the towers forward (or make them extra deep) and this would allow for the pocket doors to slide away more. Depending on ceiling height you could have extra tall towers or top boxes on top and then infill about 50-100mm up to the ceiling. Also check the height of the appliances as in the pics it looks to high, i'd have a 450 frontal with pan drawer and internal drawer instead. On the opposite wall as long as all the 800 drawer units end past the window is good, window sill same as worktop possibly, (either end the run before or after the window) lose the 400 open unit in front of the wall nib and have a door (door could be made to look like 2 drawer fronts to match) on this as it will be just a dust trap, in the 1000 drawer units i'd suggest having internal drawers for utensils etc, the corner unit is good especially with the fly moon pull out as they're great (in my opinion) and as the corner post is made on site its gives the fitter more flexibility in positioning the units as its not a fixed corner. The sink run is fine but i wouldn't suggest opening a d/washer door to let the steam out as it can damage the surrounding doors, cabinets, decor panels and even worktops (thread on mumsnet where steam has damaged granite worktops). For the island if a 500 bin is big enough then fine but you might find a 600 pull out is better as its usually a 4 bin unit, possibly change the 1000 1+2 so its a 2 pan with internal drawer and then on the other side i'd have 2x 800 which would look more symetrical. For wall units its up to you, but if its an electric hob (especially induction) the extractor should be wider than the hob and if this area is going to be a main prep area than having wall units you can add extra lighting.

We have a dining room, just thinking it would be nice for the family to be able to sit in the kitchen. Also my partner really wants to knock the utility down to create a side access from front to back garden. And I’m not keen on having to go through the kitchen to get to the toilet. We could get an island in but not sure if it is best sue of space as one wall is left bare then?

If you are wanting it to flow from the inside to the outside seamlessly and lay with the grout lines lining up, then I'd be inclined to use the same size grout line both inside and outside so you get a completely seamless look. If you were adamant you want the smaller grout line inside, then I'd lay it brickbond so that it's less obvious that they're different.

I'm afraid I don't know too much about expansion joints, as we're only suppliers, not installers, so it would be best to check that with your tiler. Generally, though you need expansion joints at intervals of at least 6m for heated floors and 8m for unheated floors. The number of expansion joints should be increased in areas with significant temperature variations and shouldn't be in high traffic areas if possible.
