What colour for the stairs?

Hi, we’ve rw Decorated nearly our whole house with some lovely little greene colours (slaked lime range with some boringtin green and goblin in different rooms). last thing is the staircase which is a big feature downstairs. I had an idea but my husband’s now got cold feet, so interested to see what others think? Any suggestions for colour? The are is really light, lots of windows etc around....thanks! (The doors will eventually be painted slaked Lime deep as per the trim/skirting)

I'm with Beano, I would also paint all the internal doors. The red tones in the doors and stairs clash with the mellow yellow tone of the floor and detract from it. It's all white, maybe a soft white and not gloss. I think the stair carpet is an excellent idea. I'd start with the spindles and leave the treads and hand rails but not the panelling ( paint that ).

Grey's will work with your colour scheme and I notice you have a grey armchair, so it will pick up on that nicely.

You could paint the stairs in slaked lime but in satin or eggshell finish..or if this is too light you could go similar tone but slightly darker..

If it were my house I would be trying to reduce the wood overload. So I would paint the spindles, newel post, hand rail and the panels below. I think then you will really enjoy the quality of the floor. I would paint the panels below in the wall colour and the newel post and handrail in a confident colour such as (L&Gs) Chocolate Colour with the spindles in a mid colour such as Clay.

hi all, update is I have finally found a photo of someones stairs done in Brintons timorous beastie yellow Ruskin butterfly and its made me decide we are definitely 100% going for this as I love it (see attached pics) on stairs and landing... Floor in hall will be oak herringbone parquet, just wall colour to decide and we have bought new tall skirting so colour to paint this also? i have attcahed apic of the hall currently so you can see our front door with stain glass.. As Ive mentioned before the banister and spindles will be replaces with square spindles with an oak top banister and oak end cap - similar to this houzz pic ... So just to deicide on wall colour and new skirting colour... I really like f&b light blue in a hall with oak parquet but I don't feel this will go with the carpet... Kitchen and dining room will be one of the sage shades and lounge Wimborne white and downpipe...

The best option seem to be the same colour as the trim.

Seen various paint transformations that could work well online plus more expensive versions where they have replaced sections with glass

If that was my staircase I would not even think of painting it, all I would do is put rugs down to break up the amount of wood it's beautiful

I’ll be honest, I had stained oak floor, oak architrave, oak doors, oak (upvc) windows and oak skirting! The only oak thing I have left is the stained oak Hall flooring! I still really love it 14 years later, the rest, all white now, I hate oak! Lol, 14 years of trying to tie in colours etc....I had enough, so easy now, most colours goes with white and if it doesn’t, I just paint it! Honest opinion, id be painting the lot and a nice 3/4 width carpet stair runner with the nickel carpet bars on each step! Give it a nicer contemporary sort of look if that’s what your after.

For me, I would paint it all and fit carpet on the actual steps. Liking Beano’s idea of a stair runner, very posh! Slaked Lime is a gorgeous off white and I’ve used it too. If you painted the stair case in that, or any white really, it would tie in so much more with those lovely green walls. It will look so much brighter and stylish. I don’t think you will regret painting it.

A nice runner up the stairs would detract from all the wood and less work than painting all the wood.

What you've done so far looks lovely. I suppose it depends on whether you want to make a feature of the stairs or make them blend in?
