Hello again all and sorry for the delay! i have now got a throw and started to extend my gallery over the corner. I grabbed an old chair and rug that were kicking about in my parents' garage and put them in the corner to give me some idea of what i want. actually, i kinda like the beat-up chair but i don't think the rug looks right. is it too small? Now i have the reddish throw (LOVE it... from the Avoca shop in Belfast - amazing place, if you are ever in Belfast do go!!) I am actually considering replacing my blind because i prefer red tones to the turquoise. Just not sure what I would get instead? Still need a fab lamp and more cushions but wisdom says wait for the January sales! I still think I need something more eyecatching on my vanity too... Considering a map above my bed but I don't know if it would compete with the gallery wall too much? have to say i do love the "hello" sign!

I'm building a new house and I've specified some Smart Home technologies - mostly for the lighting and blinds, which together can help give that lived-in look when nobody is home. I chose industry-standard technologies (DALI and KNX) so that nothing is tied to one manufacturer (who could go out of business or decide to stop making / supporting something) and there's no single central 'brain' which would cause chaos if it fails. I agree completely on the 'open technology' point - it's nice to have an app on your phone but it's not nice to have 10 separate apps because you bought things from 10 different companies, so you want everything controllable from one place and you want the labour-saving automation of one system talking directly to another (e.g. "I've just set the intruder alarm, so nobody's home, so turn down the ventilation system"). I'd also say it's worth making a judgment on where technology is changing most and not to invest a lot in something that's likely to become out of date quickly. For example, you can pay a lot of money for fancy KNX light switches but a cheap tablet will be more flexible, and voice control with Siri and Alexa is close to being mainstream.

I wouldn‘t call that bookmatched no. However bookmatching is only possible when they have a block that yielded two good slabs right next to each other so they can be opened out like a book and mirror each other. I can’t see how those two slabs could have been cut from right next to each other - perhaps they didn’t have two that were and so could be truly bookmatched. Did you ask for bookmatched pieces when you chose your marble or did you add in that request later? If the latter this may be the best they could do with the piece you chose. It’s lovely marble and in your first picture the join is not obvious. If you paid a premium for the bookmatching I would want that refunded but otherwise it’s a nice result.

I would agree with the Queen of Colour!! i could be tempted by a "Houzz" workshop :) Thanks Beano : ) I don't really contribute much nowadays but there are a number of great contributors on here that do. Whilst I agree the majority of Houzz is lovely and friendly I do agree there are a few (non-regular) posters who pop up every now and again and could be slightly more appreciative. I don't expect a "like", you could get something wrong (!) or just totally misunderstand their style but I don't think it hurts to say thanks (especially as you're prompted!). Whilst everyone who contributes does so as a hobby/passion/professional etc it does mean giving up their sometimes precious time to help a stranger. I know some things may only take minutes but people often give up hours of their free time, sometimes going back and forth for days to redesign a house or kitchen!! (Clearly not talking about myself!)
