A house without flowers, to me is just a house, not a home. A room without flowers may wear an expensive ballgown but will be bereft of the loveliest jewels to set it off. All rooms need something living. Even just a single Rose or a sprig of ivy. Fill your garden with flowers & foliage. Tipsy tulips are perhaps my favourite but then I see a bowl of garden Roses & Alchemillimollis, or a glass jar of cow parsley or a jug of white dog daisies, or....

If you are in the UK, most of the local councils offer a composting service. Normally you can only collect a couple of bags at a time, but it is free and good stuff. While you are there, why not make yourself a wee compost heap? to keep you going over the years to come...

Ooh, very pretty. Patrina, I love your lilies x. Here’s a selection of what’s flowering in my garden at mo. Yellow lilies are going over a bit and the dog tried to sneak in the pic with mini bellflowers:) My favourite is the little alpine with hanging pink and white flower. Comes back every year, no bother to look after, and bees love it. I can honestly never remember what it’s called tho. Hey ho. Lets hope we have some rain soon, my lawn is suffering, of course dog piddle doesn’t help either:)

Trees can grow incredibly tall and wide 20 ft to 100 ft depending on the species. There aren’t any trees that grow just over 6 feet and no more, unless you try fruit trees that are grafted onto a dwarf rootstock which keeps them small. . However there are some lovel shrubs (multistemmed) that grow 6-10 feet high. You need to check aspect (sunny/shaded) as well as soil type. You can get a tester from garden centres for a couple of quid. You could try Viburnum tinus an evergreen with white or pink flowers in winter. There is Photinia which is also evergreen where the new growth is red and very pretty. Cotinus is deciduous and has lovely purple leaves and frothy flowers in summer.. Lilac (Syringa) is a large very well known shrub with fragrant flowers, although it does tend to spread. My favourite at the moment is Sambucus Black Lace (I’ve just bought one!) with gorgeous Lacey purple leaves and pink flowers. There are so many wonderful shrubs you can plant, but it depends how much time you want to spend tending your garden. The plants I’ve suggested are really easy to grow.
