I would put the display and individual personal toys into the respective bedrooms. However the regular play toys I would leave in this play area.

The radiator could be re-positioned in such a way that it forms a contemporary radiator balustrade instead of the turned balusters. This will leave the rest of the area for fitted storage made from stained MDF. The desking can be part of these fitted units and placed under the window area where you can form two seating areas separated by a base drawer unit.

I would have thought a track or wire light system would be more suitable than a pendant for the office play functions. In this way light may be placed where needed.

Hi there. Do you have plans or photos of the space? This can easily be done with zoning or with a physical barrier between the areas like using the back of a sofa with a console to create a wall. It would help to see the space :)

I'd consider built in storage under the eaves as well and bring it round the corner where the table currently is to where the right hand door is. Tall storage next to the door, desk in RH corner then desk height storage under the eaves. Change the radiator for a column one to free up more space.
Have you considered painting the wooden ceiling? I think pastel or light neutral colours (not white tho) will make it feel a lot fresher and brighter.

Thanks Jen, Robert and Rachel! I do really need to declutter their stuff, definitely. Yesterday I just threw away broken things and tried to put lego / playmobil / jigsaw pieces altogether to make complete sets that they can play with. There are also a million books that I need to sort out! I have definitely considered painting the hideous orange ceiling. I did the same in the bathroom (it's all over the place!) and it looks miles better, the problem is it KILLS my neck to paint it and looks a bit patchy in places (like where I can't get the brush into the grooves and holes). I really hate the darkness of it though so will deffo do this (perhaps next week! Yay!) Mind you Rachel, why not white for the ceiling? That's the colour I did the bathroom in..... HELP!!!

Good question, of course there's no reason you couldn't paint it white plus white paint is easily sourced and cheaper. But I was just thinking that as it's the dominant feature in the space a slight tint of colour would add a bit of interest, would work really well if the walls are painted the same colour as well. Unless you have a lot of natural daylight I think brilliant white can look a little gloomy especially with our UK weather.

Thanks Rachel, I see what you mean! Brilliant white can suffer from nasty shadowy bits. My problem is that I have oak (I think) doors (feel like I shouldn't paint them) and parquet floors and I would need something that goes with those. I was thinking perhaps a rosey beigey taupey colour. Does that even exist?

Ah, that's the hard bit...choosing colours:) I don't think I would touch the doors and floors either. If you look at a colour on Farrow and Balls website you can click on colour schemes or customer inspiration for some ideas. Just had a look myself too see what would look nice with oak and think 'bone', 'smoked trout' or 'oxford stone' for the walls with a lighter complimentary colour for the ceiling. F&B is expensive tho but you can get a very good match in the finish you require by Valspar or Johnstone's trade for e.g. Do some testers first on large samples of paper and move them round and look at different times of day. Here's some more images, green one is bone with pointing on ceiling and woodwork and the other two are examples of smoked trout.

I think Built In storage is the way to go, Also I notice from your pics that the cladding looks very deep against the roof windows and was wondering if you dislike that much if it could be removed to gain a bit of extra height, looks like when it was added it could be over the top of an original ceiling. I may be wrong though!

It is really deep. I think the old lady who had the house built in 1984 really liked dark wood effects, not sure if she wouldn't have had it put directly in though....! I would like to remove it ideally If there's something ok underneath I will gladly rip it off (given my current dislike of the dark "honey" colour I could get it done right now before I take the kids to school!). Might have to send hubby into the roof to see if there's another layer of something. I originally wanted to have all the ceilings upstairs removed to expose the beams. Will seriously need to do some work on my husband for that though!!! Thanks so much for your reply

And Rachel, thanks for the colour ideas. I actually have some Johnson's equivalent of Dulux's Egyptian Cotton which I have never got round to using! I'll try it on some paper, excellent idea!

Hello,

Every room needs a purpose - a function. I would begin by giving it a purpose. An idea of what you want to achieve out of the space.

My initial instinct would be to create a relaxing, calm and light office space with lots of storage (this would hold the toys). The alternative is to create a play room..

With the office I would do a more adult, neutral pallet (working from the white) and would create a full run of built in units that go from just under the window down the the ground. This would be deep enough to hold storage boxes of toys and books.

A desk could come out from this unit (about half way down). I would then mirror a book shelf either side to give it symmetry and order adding to the calming effect.

I hope this helps. It maybe worth considering a designs on a single room design package or report style package to ensure you get the most from the space - and to your budget. All the best, Gina
