13 Smart Ways to Store Your Microwave
Follow these ideas to find the perfect position for your promptest appliance

Whether your weekly menu is mainly made up of ping meals or you only use your microwave to zap a bowl of porridge in the morning, this fast-track friend is a common feature in most kitchens. Where it is positioned will depend on the type you have. An integrated design can be built-in, but the more budget-friendly freestanding models can’t. Check out these well-considered designs to find the ideal location for yours.
Put it above a single oven
This integrated microwave sits above a single oven in a tower unit. Not only is this an efficient use of space, but it also keeps two of your main cooking appliances in one handy location. For a really sleek look, you could also install a filler strip between the microwave and oven below, which will give the impression that the appliances are one machine.

Hi Adele, We are actually unique in Europe with our accessible kitchens. We started out 25 years ago by adapting standard kitchen furniture, and gradually developed our own products. You could consider some small alterations that are possible with standard furniture. For example, a split-level area where the cooking and food prep zone is lower than the rest of the kitchen and can be accessed from a perching stool: http://www.dmkbb.co.uk/accessible-kitchens/portfolio/gloss-white-acrylic-with-corian-by-access-matters/. This can be a comfortable way to spend longer amounts of time in the kitchen, even in middle age, and useful as a place to sit and eat too. Or a corner microwave combi oven (fully featured small oven plus microwave) with plenty of space in front for safe positioning of hot plates and bowls, like we have done in this kitchen: http://www.dmkbb.co.uk/accessible-kitchens/portfolio/accessible-project-9/ The very wide knee spaces shown here require extra support underneath and are difficult technically, however a smaller lowered corner with an open space underneath is fairly easy to achieve with standard kitchen furniture and would give your mother a safe space to heat food and snacks. We also like hot water taps at the sink, which are much safer than trying to fill and transfer a kettle. Think about worktops - it becomes more difficult to keep worktops completely clear of water and splashes with reduced hand grip, so laminate worktops can suffer and deteriorate very quickly. This is one reason for the higher cost of accessible kitchens; they must be designed for very easy maintenance with materials that are completely water resistant. Door handles - need to be very smooth and comfortable to use, as older hands can become painful with conditions such as arthritis.
