I have a reclaimed wooden floor originally from a school gym in Kent, so I am obviously a complete deviant...but black rugs are a close second :D As for mushroom coloured carpets, are they officially brown? I think we may need to call a referendum ;) Also no one is owning up to any stained carpets (yet) so we are still struggling for accurate statistics there!

Mentioning percentages and grubby carpets has clearly upset some- My apologies- as far as percentages-I am not a mathematician-To clarify my previous post: these lovely wooden floors are expensive to replace, if one is not blessed with these.

Since the article mentions these are suggestions for a 'budget revamp', but one could replace them for a fraction of the cost using laminates. I love hard floors, and loathe fitted carpets. I found fitted carpets are difficult to clean- loose rugs can be sent off to be proffessionally cleaned and to me, feel cleaner, hence the preference. The proof is the amount of dust that is lifted when old carpets are ripped up. It is old loose dust that has collected over the years and is unable to escape from beneath the hessian backing, laying lattent until replaced. Hard floors simply do not have that problem, but as I saidbefore, this is not a budget option.
