What do you think of double-glazed windows?
Comments (11)You are right again, Pheobe! We sort of tricked them: we only put single glazing on the ground floor windows, the rest of the house (and back) are double glazed and all our windows have shutters (way better than secondary glaze!! :)) Our argument was that whoever is looking at the area would not notice that we have double glazed windows at first and second floor. Don't get me wrong - I love living in a conservation area and do my best to follow the rules - it all comes to respecting and enjoying the place you live in and I, as most of my neighbours, recognise this. However, I am aware that not everybody thinks the same and some would carelessly ignore its importance if rules weren't in place. What I find irritating is the lack of flexibility and the contrary, even hypocritical rules imposed by some county councils. There's always a happy medium, it's just that they seem to have missed that class. PS: Let's not forget the safety issue; it's harder to break the glass in a double glazed window than a single one....See MoreUgly House to Lovely House? How can we transform this tired exterior?
Comments (20)Thanks, Donut. It has taken a long time, but we are finally getting towards the end. We decided to play it safe in the end, and installed hardwood sash windows that come factory spray painted in a warm white. They look really lovely, but now in contrast, the exterior render looks so awful that we will have to do that now! (Bit back to front as this should have been done before the windows, but things don't always work out as they should!). Also, keep meaning to remove that nasty little black plant pot which I only ever seem to notice on photos......See MoreExterior design on a ex council home
Comments (36)White and brick is a classic and you really can't go wrong with it. But it does look a bit old and faded. Try looking up companies that do brick cleaning and sand blasting and perhaps reponting in a colour. (they mix the colour to match the bricks or another colour. The thin lines, when viewed from far, can alter the perceived colour of the bricks.- For example if you wanted a ';yellow brick house' but you 're stuck with brown, repointing in yellow will pick up the yellow tones in the brown brick and it will be yellow. Same goes for the other colours found in the brick. examine which colours are present in your current brick closely. Use a magnifying glass if you have to! You will be amazed and all the colours present in there. Then sandblast and have fun. Do this before you change the windows, as sand blasting can be damaging to the upvc, and then repoint after replacing windows. Depending on the colour the walls come out- Ask for samples on a north and south walls- then choose a black frame (for example with black poinitng) or white with the lighter colours. After a decade or two, then I would look at rendering, but for the moment, try the conservative route since the rendered look can't easily be reversed...See MoreCalling all Creatives! Comments (9)I am so glad I joined Houzz, such great knowledge and advice shared everyday! Great plans Jonathan, very bold choice of colours for the exterior I would have never considered that as we were looking at a more monochrome outlook, similar to the below. I think we would change the downstairs so that there was no garage (there is something similar already in the garden and the carriage driveway is massive) and instead a nice wide entrance area with two lounges coming off and then off the centre of that entrance large glass doors leading to a very elegant and classic kitchen and casual dining and living area with complete view of the garden. An elegant staircase would be a very nice feature of the entrance also leading to a galleried landing.Coming off the kitchen to either the left or right a study + utility room. There is also a very random bungalow in the garden - ha! No idea what to do with it but its not very good to look at....See MoreLaura Gaither
