Need help on style of porch and front door!
Comments (103)Thanks so much everyone - this has been great. Sorry for the lack of response - been flat out!!!! It must be hard for you American guys to work on such old English designs.... The ideas have gradually culminated into what really would look good on the house. Ourfarmhouse - these are absolutely great ideas, and thanks Everything Beautiful for getting the jist and putting the ideas onto the house image - nothing like seeing an actual design on your own home. We've got an architech working on it, and he's keen on the iron-wrought idea... but we're not sure. Basically toss-up with this and Everything Beautiful's design (2 above). Going with a four-pannel door, but would like to incorporate some glass somewhere! Possibly a panel above with the house name engraved on it?? Victoria - absolutely right...! We don't need to sit outside with the weather.......... say no more! Just wanting something to cover yourself while you're unlocking the door. We've also done a tour of the local areas, and found a couple of porches - amazing what you find right on your doorstep! Will attach pics shortly......See MoreChoosing aluminium sliding doors
Comments (16)It sounds like you need some fully coloured up / rendered drawings [elevations or 3D] of at least two options [maybe more], one with white frames and one with grey / anthracite frames so you can compare. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer, just your personal preference. I usually specify an off white / ivory colour for window frames as this is more subtle and doesn't show the dirt as much. You could possibly look at a very light grey / silver as an alternative. Depending on the manufacturer and cost you could go for a coloured anodised finish which will give it a slight sparkly sheen. You can also get bi-coloured frames, different colours inside and out. I think anthracite coloured and bi-fold will look clunky and out dated in a few years, fashions come and go. If you don't want curtains overhanging the frames 750mm probably better than 600. However, speak to your curtain co. now before you get the work done as they should be able to tell you how much wall space you need. Thicker curtains with backing fabric take up more space. Have you considered timber blinds as an alternative, shouldn't take up as much space? Personally, I think a split of 3 panes is better. Always in odd nos, 3, 5, 7, etc. This means your eyes subconsciously centre on the middle pane. This is quite a classical, ordered approach [look at stately homes porticos] but it works. If worried about visible glazing frames go for ultra slim sliders such as ID Systems 'the edge' or Schueco, Raynaeurs are good but expensive....See Morehelp choosing windows and door colour.
Comments (5)I think white windows would work well and match the pipes, fascias, etc. You have a door panel which will throw in light into presumably the hallway. Additional glazing in the door is personal preference; I think both would look well. Both a contemporary and traditional door would suit the property in my opinion....See MoreI need help choosing windows/doors
Comments (9)Thanks for your advice everyone. We thought about steps. The extension is 6m wide so I think instead of looking like a zoo it will be a theatre! It is worth considering though. We only want the deck as access to the garden really. Maybe no more than 2m. We will use the right hand side as a patio area. We didn't really want a deck but seems like it is the right solution to have folding doors straight out to the garden rather than having windows. If we had windows we wouldn't have to deal with this deck business!...See MoreGeneviève
