Comments (23)Wow that is an amazing garden and view. A pergola is a good idea to add a feature but for a more serviceable structure you could opt for a patio roof or garden roof. These aluminium roofs contain fully automated louvres so you can control whether your relaxation space is sunny of shaded depending on the day. Another plus for the UK is that these roofs become watertight when the louvres are flat so you can use your outdoor space, and appreciate that view no matter the weather. From the picture I’m guessing closer to the fence gets better sun than directly out the back door? If so, I’d look to make something of the bottom of the garden, I’m a big fan of decking (although realise it’s not for everyone), if your dimensions come up good you might even get away with using full boards of only having to do single cuts (I’d go full length rather than a corner or raft). Building a base is easy (loads of YouTube videos), you’ll want 6-8 posts sinking around the perimeter and that will work as a foundation to attach your frame to (triangles are stronger than squares so take that into consideration when doing the base). For a step (if required) it’s just a case of building a platform, if you need multiple for the decking (depends how high you’ve gone) my advice is build another platform to attach to the first, don’t try to build actual steps it’s hard work (especially if not a DIYer). You can then look at either some sort of paving/path from the house to the decking, or if it were me I’d take up a channel of grass and sink some railway sleepers and attach decking, making sure to include side lighting (can cut and drop these in yourself with a holesaw). Make sure to lay a good quality ground sheet in the channel to prevent weeds at a later date. On the deck itself I’d furnish with rattan and include a pergola in one of the corners (having space that’s covered and the other end in direct sun gives options), maybe throw in a fire pit if you don’t have little ones / frequent visitors with them, then add some nice planters and you are well on your way. Small section to accommodate a BBQ if that’s your thing and job done. You could use left over decking boards to make basic planters that can go in front of the decking or around the perimeter of the garden, as far as plants go as at your local nursery or garden centre, my advice for someone who’s not a gardener is to go for more mature plants that are already up and in good shape, the garden centre will be able to point you in the direction of things that done die off during winter and remain green all year round (they’ll also guide you as to when things will flower so you can either look for all year coverage or just specific months when the garden will be in most use)....See MoreLong, narrow garden - in need of creative layout ideas
Comments (19)Congratulations on your purchase. It looks like a lovely space to make your own. How little is your girl? One thing I've learned is that empty open spaces are not necessarily immediately conducive to kids play. They like hiding themselves and things behind things (trees, bushes, flowers, dens, playhouses). The series of rooms / zones thing could really work. The big hits all the kids I know are water play and a swing. Water play could be a tray or a raised table somewhere. Or a mud kitchen. And of course the classic summer paddling pool and jumping over the sprinkler. Could you fit a swing in somewhere? Maybe a pergola attached to the garden office? It can be a baby swing seat to begin with and then turn into a stylish boho rope seat suitable for older kids and teenagers. Once girls get older, the stats show that most do not do as much physical exercise. They do seem to like trampolining though- and it's fantastic exercise! Do think about where one could go in the future (including the dug in type)....See MorePrimrose
