Ceiling light or fan?

My husband and I are buying a new construction home that has a great room with a double height ceiling. It will have can lighting and a junction box for a ceiling fan or chandelier.

I was initially not into the idea of getting a ceiling fan, but I haven't seen any light fixtures I like that are large enough to fit the space, so I'm thinking a ceiling fan might be more practical and will help with heating and cooling such a giant room.

If we do get a fan, we would get a Haiku with SenseMe technology, which I think is pretty stylish and has some neat features. There's a 60" version, which would be large enough to fit the space. We would get it in the light bamboo/white color.

I've attached a photo of the room from the model home, but unfortunately it doesn't capture the true height of the ceiling.

Please let me know why you chose fan or light and if we should go with a light I'm open to suggestions on the type. Our style is fairly contemporary.

You will need that fan in the summer months. If you have air conditioning the fan will only improve your air flow, and keep the room comfortable. Light fixtures that high up do not look attractive.

Thank you! That's what I'm thinking. The model has a large glass fixture, which I think looks okay, but it's not really my style. You can just barely see the bottom of it at the top of the photo.

Hi joelizabeth, They ship internationally and sit in a showroom that is twice the size of your living room... They are actually quite sizeable, granted they are not larger spheres, but offer a different kind of cluster light because they can hang quite low and they offer bespoke sizing.. I see what you mean- they do really work with grey or a darker colour scheme.. but the transparency of them can look really magical.. They have bright led's inside which illuminate the pebble - and so accent the little lights you have on those twigs.. With a couple of lower lighting options like a table lamp or a wall light... I could see them hanging off centre quite easily... Leaving the fan well alone.. Having them sitting off centre, is more interesting sometimes than having everything looking symmetrical.. Sometimes symmetry doesn't work... With the option to have them hanging at differing heights, you can create a unique configuration or even have them in a straight line.... They are glass ovals situated in a nickel metal surround and chain which houses the flex/cord which is woven into it. At the moment showrooms in London and New York.. You will find what works for you.. : ) )

In the summer we visited relatives in their new house which has a run of bifold doors across the back of their new home. We sat in the kitchen, which is very stylish etc. etc. and enjoyed having the doors fully opened as the heat was uncomfortable indoors once the sun came out. They're now finding (autumn) that they have to open one of the doors to get fresh air into the room and, on a rainy day, it's not ideal. It's going to be interesting to see how they'll fare during the winter. Imagine having to have a door open when it's cold outside just to let in some fresh air. On top. Of all this their dog wanders in and out when the doors are open....... Fan lights still have their uses in my opinion.

Haven't seen any nice fan/light combos? I agree ruling out the recessed lights are the way to go. There's the maintenance issues and also the chance the light behind the fan will strobe. Horrible to live with.

Agree with Forzaitalia, do not like them (if they are in a house in the UK). Also when I see them in houses on Rightmove etc it makes me think the house must be uncomfortably lacking in ventilation otherwise the owner would not have installed the fan.

If the room will be used for lounging and TV, I'd do the fan. If it will be used for cocktails and group entertainment, I'd do a chandelier.

Thank you! Love the photos. The room's main purpose will be for TV and lounging, though the floor plan is very open, so when we entertain it'll be used for that too.

I would recommend a ceiling paddle fan. It will even out your room temperature better, even with air conditioning. You may even be able to raise your thermostat in the summer, to help with energy costs. With enough recessed lights, you may not need a light on the fan.
