Help with west facing ... landscape dilemma

Hello,

I would like some ideas on how to beautify this side of the house...the stairs lead to our garden. It's west facing...

any feedback is greatly appreciated.......

It's very close to beautiful already. Find out from your local nursery what can take the harsh afternoon sun and fill those beds! Or just fill them with more of the same. Put a few large plant containers ... terracotta, I think ... in a lovely urn shape, and plant them up with the same kind of plant in each. Three or four, depending on the length of this area. Plant them with something that gives you height (the same thing in each container). If you want colour, allow small areas among those low-growing plants for annuals, and swop them around each year. Just think what spaced-out patches of indigo petunias, or orange marigolds, could do to lift your heart.

That low hedge might mean that sun-loving annuals could be planted only on the left side, but that's fine. It'll still look great.

Thanks everyone esp Carolins and Minnie for all their continued advice. I have the Mongolian cushion ordered! and a few samples of the material I posted being sent to check it out first . I am going to remember what you gave said about texture when it comes to the cushions and ornaments. Going to stop overthinking the cushion problem and just make a decision! :-) I'll post again when I have made further progress . Many thanks again .

Hi Anna, I know it's a pain inheriting an outdated room but how exciting to make it your own! I think a scandi look would really energise and brighten this space too. Take a look at two rooms we have styled in this way. Our blinds fit perfectly in bay window areas allowing extra floor space and not blocking any heat from radiators. The blinds in the shoots are dim-out but if you have a north facing bedroom chances are it's cold so I suggest our Bloc Out blinds which not only provide total blackout for the bedroom but have been independently tested by The British Board of Agrément and are proven to reduce heat loss through the window by 43%. I'm going to get a bad name on here for being the voice of doom...........I just like to point out pitfalls so that people are informed. The right side of the house was built as a single storey. Therefore you cannot presume that when the footings were dug, that they were dug deep enough to accommodate two storeys in the future. In fact, it's unlikely, as that would have incurred more cost. Thus, you should presume that the garage floor would need to be dug up and the footings investigated. It is most likely that the whole end would need underpinning of some sort or another / new footings etc to accommodate another floor above. As that's costly, you may wish to amend the plans for the upstairs and the down stairs and consider something more like Jonathans excellent plans. This would be my starting point, along with , as always where the accessible drains are, which as luck would have it, appear to be both front and back, so that's good news. I know that we'd probably all do something different, and I agree with Jonathan about that end. I personally would have to have the big open plan rooms at the rear........better view or not, just simply for the amount of space to move about in unhindered. I like space! If I wanted to have somewhere hot and sunny to sit, i'd have a terrace at the front as well as the back, but I wouldn't sacrifice the frontage to achieve it. If you've got a lot of space then as one of the other ladies mentioned,,,,,,,,,,,,,push a terrace far back enough so that you catch the sun.

Thank you for your suggestions. We’ve got an architect coming round tomorrow so hopefully he’ll be able to tell us which walls are possible to take out. That’s a good idea to dig out the ground and maybe put glass doors along the back. I’d really like to be able to step straight outside without steps and it would let a lot more light in. The downside is the loss of wall space to fit kitchen units. Both rooms have large chimney breasts so i think it will either have to be a bespoke kitchen which is fitted around them or take out the chimney breasts. Not sure which one would be in our budget. I was also thinking a large island unit, but then that would block the view of the glass doors from the dining and sitting area.

I'm a big fan of lavender at the moment -- beautiful colour, smells gorgeous, and not too difficult to look after.
