Do you remember the scent? The wallpaper in your room? The neighbours? Quite a few remember their childhood homes vividly - what's your strongest memory?

I remember the wallpaper in my room when I was little. It was Disney characters - Micky and Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck and his nephews. They all were my friends!

I remember the sky blue, puffy white cloud and rainbow wallpaper that covered my bedroom walls. The yellow wood stained kitchen. The hanging plants and wind chimes that hung above the stairs. Mine and my mums taste was and still is very retro, bohemian, vintage and eclectic style. With my taste I always thought I that I might have lived in an other age also.

My husband and I traveled from Vienna (where we were on business) to Athens to visit his college roommate from 1968. They had exchanged emails about our flight arrival and we expected his friend Greg to be waiting for us at the airport as his email indicated he would be. Four hours later, Greg still hadn't come to get us. I kept asking my husband if he was sure Greg had the right day, the right time, right airline, blah, blah, blah. Now Husband is getting angry that I'm questioning his ability to make travel arrangements. I'm mad at myself knowing he is completely incapable of doing so, and why did I let him handle this without me double-checking his email? I insisted on reading said email and... Much to my horror, but not to my surprise, he had given Greg the wrong date. Not only that, he has no idea where Greg works, does not have a phone number for him and has no home address for him; just an email address (we did not have cell phones back then). I may have raised my voice, as I noticed many women of various nationalities from throughout the world who happened to be at baggage claim in Athens and witnessed my meltdown gave me countless comforting looks of solidarity and sympathy, proving that I am not the only wife who occasionally wants to smack the bejesus out of her loved one. I suggested a cab to the nearest Marriott with a full bar, whereupon I first threw back several martinis and then proceeded to the business center and sent an email to Greg informing him of our arrival. He was only 6 miles away, but it took him 2 hours during rush hour traffic to get to us. Welcome to Athens traffic, oh my! By the time dear old Greg arrived, I was well lit, but still annoyed at my hubby. He got no lovin' that night, not even the drunk, sloppy kind. The rest of our Greek adventure was delightful!

To add to my earlier comment, I think my individualism epitomises the very essence of being a true Brit. I'm not a slave to trends, just go with my heart and hope my design ideas will come together in some sort of coherent way. There's pride in that in spades, and we're a proud nation, aren't we?!

We lived in a 3 bed semi until I was 11. Half of it faced due north, so there was a room we never ever used. Then we moved to a 4 bed, which we needed, as there were 6 kids. I absolutely loved the second house. It didn't face any direction fully, so it got sun in most rooms at some stage. It was on a turning circle in a cul de sac, so it looked really small from the front, but had an irregularly shaped extension at the side that was completely soundproof.( My brothers could play their music really loudly and noone ever complained). This opened out into a huge garden, which my mother made absolutely beautiful. My parents built two patios in it together and my mother built her own flower bed, using dry stone walling techniques. My parents had lots of midcentury furniture, some of which was made by my father from a book on Swedish design. You could buy the orange sofa he made now! There was a little gazebo in the garden which turned out to be a monk's cell, the last part of the abbey that had been there. A tree in our garden was pruned by a man who happened to have come there as an apprentice tree surgeon, and he was able to tell us that it had had a bench all the way around the inside. It fell down during Hurricane Charlie, as the front wall was leaning, but my father rebuilt it over the course of 9 years. My mother's style is way ahead of her time; their bedroom has been duckegg blue and brown for about 20 years!

sianember - Love the mirrors! They bring back happy memories. I have a business 'upcycling' furniture - although I've been doing it for over 20 years now and recycling was hardly a thing, let alone upcycling, in those days :D - but I started out selling mirrors on Greenwich market. A friend and I would find old mirrors in junk shops (this was in the halcyon days when every high street had at least one, sadly they are few and far between now) and we would 'pimp' them and sell them. We were particularly fond of using shells as they were free, meant we got to spend a day at the seaside and we could use the children to collect them!
