Furniture for a modern kitchen - any idea?

After 4 years of planning, we have eventually extended our kitchen. It has huge doors which slide back and effectively extend the house into the garden. In keeping with this we have gone for a very modern, minimalist kitchen. This was all finished last xmas and we have been using an old pine kitchen table ever since.
We are thinking of buying a white (extending) table, which we would turn round and place at the opposite end away from the tv. We can't decide on dining chairs (bright colours or white, high-back or modern kitchen type chairs).
The whole area is about 7m by 4m so there is plenty of space for a couple of comfortable chairs to sit and watch the tv. Any ideas for these would be much appreciated. We have been looking for ages but haven't seen anything that we feel would be just right.

Comments (6)Those look nice, I think to fit truly into a modern house you need a modern design and these look more traditional / classic. On eBay all the rattan sets that look modern (rattan cube) would look best in modern homes, but the colours are lacking. Your grey, in one of these cube sets would look great. 9 years agoHi. This is really beautiful and it makes me want to slide open all those amazing doors and run into your garden RIGHT NOW. Anyway, how many people would you usually want to seat at the dining table? I notice you seem to have two red bar stools (I think?!) on the other side of the island. Do you want to keep these? Do you like the red and want to tie it in?
I think the white extendable table is a good idea and, really, you can do just about any kind of chair - modern, traditional, fabric, metal, wooden, eclectic mix.... I'll find a couple of things and see if you like any.
In the meantime, that is a great tele set up and imagine it would be wonderful to sit there in a couple of comfy chairs. I would recommend one long sofa facing the TV that becomes the separation between that area and the dining area (you could even put a console table behind it) or something like this:That is, two chaises with a little table in between (forget the lamp, which is impossible and clumsy in the middle of a room unless you have floor outlets). Make sure the scale of the chaises is right (not too giant and overwhelming the room). You can also arrange it so that they become an almost-sofa - turn them so that they are joined and the main arm is on the outside and the inside is a bit of arm and low in the middle. Provided you put proper pads on their feet, you can also just slide them into the corner in front of the glass when you are extending the table. (I also love the rug in the photo for the "sofa" to TV area and it would separate the two spaces and be yummy in winter).

It's somewhat similar to what we have, however we decided not to have a permanent dining table, as we knew we so rarely use it. We filled the space with a large semi-circular sofa - great for watching TV and chatting with friends whilst cooking.
For those times when we have dinner guests, we bought a folding table that we keep on the side http://www.barkerandstonehouse.co.uk/furniture/Dining-Room/Tables/Oslo-SM101-MultiFunction-Table/sizes-1830-65263/ - in wenge. Also, we purposely chose these bar stools because when lowered they are the perfect height for a dining chair and can be used with the table (see below; sorry, the place was a mess when I took the photos. That arrow shows you where we keep the folding table, next to my bike!)
There are lots of tables of a really great quality. Have a look for Calligaris, Ozzio Design or Ligne Roset tables, their extending ones are some of the best. If you go for one of those, then use the brilliant advice you've been given by boundsgreener and get a sofa or two chaises for some comfy telly time.
