The brickwork effect is called a rusticated wall. Usually seen on the ground floor of Palladian/neo classical, Renassience and classical building.

Hi I had the same dilemma with the dining part of my kitchen. I love the brick wall effect so decided to try a wallpaper as it's only a small wall. I'm really pleased with the results. It cost me just £9 for one roll from B & Q. You can only tell it's wallpaper by getting up close and touching it - before and after photos attached.

Building extension in conservation area

Hi Daniel, I'd say it really depends on the design/overall shape of the new extension. Do you have an architect/designer on board? It might take a bit of sketching and experimenting, until you get to a certain principle. I would look at GF and first floor as two different blocks, which can be finished in two different materials. Keep the black brick for ground floor, and timber clad (can be timber slats, tongue and groove clad, stone clad, f.ex.). It does't have to be white as the house, the planners will accept something modern but cleverly designed, even in a conservation area. Some photos for inspiration below - not necessarily showing black brick but just good looking combos: If you feel like hiring a professional, we could provide with a concept design and visuals/sketches, don't hesitate to get in touch. Will you be changing the lower cladding too ? I feel if you embrace the anthracite on doors and windows and anything else that’s currently white, you might want to replace the lower cladding with shiplap in dark grey too ? I wish i could do the photoshop thing ! Sorry !
