Need help designing the headboard of master bedroom to include mural

I am lucky enough to have an artist cousin who I have commissioned to paint a large painted mural (approx. 4' x 4') which will consist of a circlet of native wild flowers set within a painted square for behind our bed in our newly refurbished house. Any ideas for how to treat the space between the mattress (ie where the pillows go) and the actual mural so as to provide a padded space for leaning against while reading and not to rest our heads against the painting and thus spoil it?
