POLL: Conservatories and garden rooms - yay or nay?
Comments (121)I never understood why people don't build their conservatory for year round use. It's all about light and heat control. Automatic sun reflective shades along the roof windows will keep the room from overheating in the summer and even help keep it warm in the winter. Proper wall and ceiling insulation, double or gas permeated triple glazing will keep it comfortable year around with the right heating. Add a wee wood stove in a corner with a simply pipe chimney and you have yourself a lovely winter sun room to brighten your cold winter days. If you live where there is snow, even better. It'll feel like a wee slice of paradise....See MorePOLL: Wicker furniture - love or loathe?
Comments (16)yes, yes yes! Love it. Glencrest Katie Blake outdoor furniture in Grey. More like sofa's than outdoor chairs and gorgeous to lounge on. Wicker nowadays is a clever PVC concoction so can be left outdoors all winter. Come summer.... hose or pressure wash off and there you go. It used to be old fashioned but not anymore.... super stylish....See MorePOLL: Eggs - free-range or caged?
Comments (31)Gerry, yes, you may well be right and I may be a little hard on the hobby chicken keepers. However, some of them don't seem to live in the real world of food production if their wild statements are anything to go by. The "welfare lobby" fulfils a very useful function by keeping pressure on the government to keep reviewing management standards. This is very apparent in the UK where, I believe, whilst we are not perfect, we do have a good balance between high production and welfare of the animal. Our farmers frequently complain that the standards they have to meet are higher than those observed on the continent. Apart from our own burgeoning population, India and China have about 2.5 billion people to feed - not easy and they don't want to be living on just rice and nut roasts.I have nothing at all against organic food whether it be bread or meat and it often tastes so much better. However, it is expensive and difficult to produce in quantity. For example, if someone is able to produce a grass which, like legumes, can fix nitrogen, then we will, if you pardon the phrase, "be on the pig's back" to some degree. Until then we must struggle on. Food security is important for every country. Post World War II it was the policy of our government to be self sufficient in food and we more or less achieved that by the end of the century. We could discard this policy and import a lot of meat from Brazil and Argentina, both of which countries can finish beef in the great outdoors (on grass). However, this would destroy our own beef industry and leave us very vulnerable. Like the title of a book by the late Enoch Powell - no easy answers!...See MorePOLL: Conservatory or extension?
Comments (192)If you were our client, we would first assess which way the house faces in order to understand the direction of the sun and the likely impact on the space in terms of light and heat, plus we would ask what use you intend to place on the new space. It is also the case that with whatever heating - a fully glazed conservatory can seem an inhospitable space in the winter months. Even in the UK heat gain during our short summer is a major consideration and whilst roof blinds can be added - these can spoil the original design intent. A part solid / part glazed roof with fully glazed walls may be the most successful.
