Exotic plants in your home?

Olive trees, palm trees, cacti, bamboo, and aloe vera - there are plenty of tropical plants to like and love, even though some of them are not so easy to nurture in the UK!

What types of exotic plants can be found in your home (or in your garden)?

Olives are fine here in the UK. Other tender plants can be successful in sheltered courtyards or spaces. Planted where materials such as brick walls retain heat & create micro-climates.

Bamboo does `Too` well here and should always be considered carefully, it can be very invasive even the so called `clump` forming ones. I would advise always to retain bamboo in containers or with professional bamboo root barrier.

Lemons/Limes can do well in warm sunny & protected positions, in city micro-climates & orangeries / glass rooms.

I've used tall olive trees in kitchens and dining spaces with all year round clear/white lights on - it's a lovely combination of softness and natural elements that can really add to a homely feeling !!!

We lived in a 3 bed semi until I was 11. Half of it faced due north, so there was a room we never ever used. Then we moved to a 4 bed, which we needed, as there were 6 kids. I absolutely loved the second house. It didn't face any direction fully, so it got sun in most rooms at some stage. It was on a turning circle in a cul de sac, so it looked really small from the front, but had an irregularly shaped extension at the side that was completely soundproof.( My brothers could play their music really loudly and noone ever complained). This opened out into a huge garden, which my mother made absolutely beautiful. My parents built two patios in it together and my mother built her own flower bed, using dry stone walling techniques. My parents had lots of midcentury furniture, some of which was made by my father from a book on Swedish design. You could buy the orange sofa he made now! There was a little gazebo in the garden which turned out to be a monk's cell, the last part of the abbey that had been there. A tree in our garden was pruned by a man who happened to have come there as an apprentice tree surgeon, and he was able to tell us that it had had a bench all the way around the inside. It fell down during Hurricane Charlie, as the front wall was leaning, but my father rebuilt it over the course of 9 years. My mother's style is way ahead of her time; their bedroom has been duckegg blue and brown for about 20 years!

The most homely thing about my home is the lounge in the autumn/winter. A cosy fire, a sofa blanket, a cup of tea and my dog nestled between my husband and I. We are about to move and the new house doesn't have a fire. It is my top priority to install one before the first Autumn!

Who waters your plants when you're on holiday?

I give my plants a big water a couple of days before I leave plus feed if it's due and on the morning or night before I give them another drink so the water stays in the pot about 1 to 1.5 inches. I know they say that you shouldn't leave your plants sitting in water but I always do it and it works for my Orchids which I have had for about 5 years now which keep flowering all the time. I go away for about three weeks so don't want to put the onus on my neighbour who holds my key and looks after my post. I always leave them in the same place they usually sit which is away from direct sunlight. Plants always do well with the morning sun on them.

Climbing plants - including evergreens although not Ivy - can successfully be used on buildings and can look beautiful. My two top tips would be to choose the plant well, make sure it is fairly low growing so you can control it and secondly erect wires using vine eyes, tensioners and wire so that the plant has a definite framework to grow on and you can keep it away from windows and doors. We use the Gripple system shown below.
