Living room wall decor & rug

Hi!
I'm having a bit of a trouble deciding how to dress the wall in our living room and what colour rug to go for?
The sofa is a cream-beige with some subtle grey tones in it. The colours we chose for the cushions are lime and deep purple. The coffe tables are a gunmetal grey. The colour of the wall is the Dove Tale from Farrow & Ball ( http://www.farrow-ball.com/dove-tale/colours/farrow-ball/fcp-product/100267). I tried to take a close-up picture to give you a better view of the colours. There isn't much else in the room at the moment, but we did order a tv unit which will sit opposite the sofa and which has a wenge coloured thin frame and gloss white doors.
I was thinking of having two paintings on the wall behind the sofa but can't decide what tones to go for.. Shall I stick to a simple black & white design? Or go for a bit of colour? I really love the work of artist Bella Pieroni, especially her Figurative collection. Comments (20)Thank you everyone for your great ideas! Actually, the room is not as dark as you think - the window is east facing, and we do get a good deal of sunshine through it... I think the pictures don't do the room justice. I do agree, dark furniture does make it seem very dull though. OK, here is what I am thinking at the moment... Unfortunately, the sofa does not fit quite right againt the opposite wall, neither does the love seat by the window (I've measured everything up and the sofas are of the wrong sizes). I'd like to replace the love seat with a couple of chairs (as the love seat is quite chunky, and does dominate the room as you walk in), but I can't justify spending the money on that just yet :( I am planning to buy a bigger rug (thank you for the suggestion, ren2513), I do love the white/cream as we have now, but will go for something with a bit more colour through it, and definitely replace the coffee table with a bright ottoman (thinking something along these lines at the moment http://www.marksandspencer.com/oval-button-footstool/p/p22344378001 colour Measham,Ochre)... And I'd like to move the existing rug behind the love seat. I'd also like to either match the wall paper or a few pictures on the wall to the ottoman (colour-wise) for some continuation. The ceiling lamp shade will be replaced with something a bit more original (this was fitted in a rush when we moved in, with no thought behind it!) All the speakers will go, as I don't think they look right in the room, and will be replaced with more descrete ones :) We are keen to replace the TV stand with Skovby TV unit and a display cabinet (in white oak), so a similar idea to what was suggested by Sauve :) thank you! Comments (5)Hi Danielle. Are your parents literally looking to change everything then?? I can see your mum likes greys and inky blues, which way does the room face? Rather than use the darker paints on the half walls, which I think divides the room, consider using on the fireplace ŵall ( do you have a pic of this?) and under the stairs. I'd keep the other room light for reading.As they have a separate living room, I'd reduce seating, a small 2/3 sofa under the window but pulled away from the ŵall. Full length curtains could look good here but it depends if there's room when the sofa is pulled away, maybe check when you have measurements and go for a slimmer table. I'd keep the curtains light to tie in with ŵall colour. Where the other sofa is have an accent chair in the corner with a floor lamp behind. Where the mirror is I'd put a low wide bookcase with matching table lamps and a mirror over the top. I'd also go for a smaller patterned rug as its hiding the lovely floor. I agree re the porch door but it's letting a lot of light in, maybe they can cover with cardboard and assess the impact! Are there any pendant lights at all? I'd go for an extending dining table so they can accommodate more guests, it looks as if they could pop the extra (smaller) dining chairs in corners? It doesn't look as if full length curtains would hang properly unless the rad was moved? Perhaps a vase of faux flows on the dining table ( good quality!). The art looks good but I don't think the ones next to the window work so would look at some of the positions and maybe create gallery walls. design wise maybe modern English country?? 9 years agoHi Maridem, Just had a look through the paintings.I personally liked the Orchestra III from luxdeco. It has quite a few colours, that would make it flexible for u to change the furnishings around in your living room.
And for the rug, a patterned one with a light background would look great, in my opinion.

9 years agoThis is the wallpaper that I have just had a sample of, it would do really well in your room. I know you didn't mention having a wallpaper but you can get the matching fabric cushions and throw.

9 years agoMaybe if you didn't necessarily put a painting but maybe a mirror or cool wallpaper.
How about these mirrors? You can have as many as you like and spread them out as much as you like? You could add in a shelf with some family photos on or just basic items that match the colour.
