Painting project of a wardrobe

Hi there we've got a second hand wardrobe (solid wood) with some paint defects. Shown on the right side of the door. I have sanded it down the left and it's disappeared. We have got farrow and ball paint to repaint the wardrobe. Wondering if I should sand it down all the way to the original wood or just as much to smooth it out. This is my first time ever taking up a project as this. Pls help as we don't want to ruin such a nice wardrobe. Thanks :)

Which kind of F&B paint have you bought ? Estate eggshell ?! Is it a light or dark colour ?!

Or you could try annie Sloan chalk paint. Great if you're a novice painter and no prep needed, her old white paint would work. You can also distress them if you want, read up on it on her website. Do you think you could remove the decorative plinth or whatever it's called as that is really dating them?. I'd buy the door knobs after you've painted to see if you like it as they can be dear and you need a few. You could also try wallpapering the middle section at the back. I've attached an image from littleenglandandco but go for something contemporary and quite bold. It should (hopefully!) draw your eye to this rather the wardrobes.

You could have the glass covered with vinyl. You can fit this yourself but a sign or graphics centre are the experts.

For plastic or melamine surfaces I usually would do a wash with sugar soap, wipe down, then use a suitable primer. There’s ESP (easy surface prep) by Owatrol, an etching primer that works well and acts as a bond between surfaces, however it’s expensive and tricky to use. Zinsser Bullseye 123 (blue one), which also acts as a stain sealer which is great if you think any stains might leach through, however this is also not cheap. There’s also paints specifically for melamime cupboards ( I think Ronseal do one but I’ve not tested them so couldn’t vouch for them. What I’ve been using just lately is cheap chalk paint (Aldi have been selling some just lately for £5 a tin), apply two coats then when dry sand down with 400 grit sand paper which gives a super smooth surface to apply colour. Then I use ordinary matt emulsion 2-3 coats, sand again then apply a top coat of clear water based varnish. Should result in a good hardwearing finish. I would advise to remove all doors and handles/hinges etc. so you can work on them flat and look out for paint dribbles round the edges. Also, applying extra coats of paint will result in a tighter fit so you need to allow for this and sand round edges if necessary. Other alternative, which I haven’t tested is using car spray paints, I know you can get etching primer in Halfords, might be worth a try. Hope this helps.

Yes it is an estate eggshell. Colour is ringwold no 28. It's a little lighter than the original colour which is more of a yellowy beige.

Ok. A light sanding - then if you have some light undercoat add one coat then another light sanding and two top coats of the paint colour should be about right !

That's what my painter does - some people just use paint with no undercoat - some do four coats - so to some extent you can't go too wrong - just don't overload your brush - as a couple of thin coats is better then one uneven thick coat ! It dries pretty quickly !! Have fun !!
