The lighting is dim, sorry, but you get the general idea. I like classical styles (maybe with a hint of fun) and I'm only able to change the accessories at this time - eg the light shade, lamps, art, cushions.
(A new carpet is arriving the matches the walls and curtains).

Comments (9)Just a thought, what about putting the bed against the wall of the walk in wardrobe and you can still have your headboard, no need to change or move a radiator and the wife's side of the bed would be next to the wardrobe entrance. It's all a bit cramped by the looks of things and while you'll have your ensuite and your walkin wardrobe you'll still be walking into a box room. Another thought I had to to lose the bedside cabinets and increase the appearance of space would be in to have the bed side lights on the partition wall and the storage built into the stud wall with pull out shelves for those breakfast in bed moments and cups of tea. Comments (10)I think decorating with red can be difficult but in my opinion there are some tricks. Firstly I would choose a wallpaper that has a pattern. Be mindful of your desire to make the room elegant and avoid retro patterns, abstract swirly patterns and high contrasts of colour such as red and white or red and black. If you find a pattern you like such as the pictures included you will have a palate of three colours you can use which makes it easier to make decorating choices- for instance if you chose the Wysteria pattern- you could add this to either the whole room or a feature wall then consider the grey colour for the remaining walls. Personally I think the plain duvet needs a Chunky knit throw and the bedside tables need a bigger more ornate table lamp. Comments (12)Hi everyone! Just posting an update to show how it’s all progressing. Thank you all very much for your suggestions and advice! In the end, we opted to take the easiest possible approach. We re-used the old MDF covering as a backing board cut out a hole for so that the fireplace is visible, and tiled it out. We then made a “surround” for the “hole” (because the tiles wouldn’t fit and we didn’t fancy cutting any more than we necessary) and stuck it on over the MDF. I then painted the “feet” to get rid of the sludgy grey colour. I’m happy with the results! Certainly not practical or usable as a heat source in any shape or form, but I think it’s nice to look at, at the very least! Next step is to find something for the hearth, not quite sure what to do just yet!...See More

9 years agoThank you, there are some great suggestions. I will move the rug under the legs of the bed and match up the lamps.
I am considering a feature wall in one of the contrasting colours as here, probably the 2nd or third from darkest. On which wall do you think would this look good? Or maybe all 4 walls??

9 years agoSusanna, great advice from Louise however in my opinion leaving the above picture rail the same colour as the ceiling could mean you can use a stronger, darker shade. Or at least it worked for our bedroom (Dulux Dusted Damson).
PS: As I said, great advice from everyone above and I think you've done a great job so far. Please share a pic when it's finished.

9 years agoWhat a wonderful and spacious bedroom! I would definitely brighten up the beautiful period fireplace by filling it with some large white candles (see image for rough idea) and displaying some trinkets and pictures on the mantelpiece. I also think you could do with a lamp or two on your chest of drawers and dressing table... Warm lighting can make such a difference to a room. Good luck with it!
