North Facing living room

Hello,

I am wondering if you can help. I have just bought a new house and the living room is north facing. It leads onto the kitchen which is south facing. I love the idea of a light gray colour on the walls and white (off white) wood paneling half way up the walls on just one wall. I also like the idea of having a dark (black) wood floor and having white woodwork. I had thought about running the grey theme through to the kitchen also.

however I have read that you shouldn't use grey tones in a dark room. I do intend to have a lot of lights in the room also. Can one please help? I have seen some beautiful rooms here with grey tones. Sorry I can't provide photo until after the weekend.

Use warm white bulbs in your lamps and add warm tactile fabrics, throws and cushions to add warmth ! Sounds lovely !!

I agree - some good warm lighting and soft furnishings to the room (perhaps some Metallics and mirrors to bounce light around as well) would look fab.

Our old lounge was small, dark & North facing and I went all in dark & moody with it in blacks & greys. Only difference is I added more mirrors and a splash of colour with the cushions.

You shouldn’t need to repost - you can edit it (on a pc webpage) and I’d add it to design dilemma as that’s where I think a lot of people follow We used dusk in the valley by valspar for this room, as with the glow from the lamp/copper on the inside of the light it gives a warm glow from the light as well... depends whether you use it more during the day or in the evening. It’s an east facing room but because of the dormer and being a small window it’s not the brightest

I’ve got a cool lit north facing room and in the end colour matched f&b strong white and used that. It’s a greige colour which keeps it light and airy but gives it that warmth without the yellowy hue in magnolia type colours. I don’t get much sun in the room but the colour darkens in the cool mornings and lightens/warms up in the afternoons. It looked so light on the swatch but it completely changed when I put it in the light conditions of the room. It would complement the curtains nicely due to the underlying grey hues but isn’t too cold a colour. I’ve included a picture of what it looks like on the walls in my cool lit living room, the ceiling is white for comparison the floor a grey laminate. Sorry that was the tidiest bit of the room for a photo, the kids don’t give it a chance! Hope it helps x Perhaps paint a few large cardboard scraps and bluetack them to the walls, and see how each colour changes.

We need @Juliet Docherty! I would say grey is not the best choice for a north facing room, but you can add more warmth with more accessories. The little bit of room we can see needs more art and accessories. It looks a little bare. As the walls are quite high, I think the picture needs to be put up on the wall? The wall above the ladder could do with something too, like a clock, or more art, or shelves. Perhaps adding some wood will warm it up too, eg side table, shelves on the other wall. Or some brass. It’s just a bit hard to advise with such a tiny part of the room in the picture.
