Kitchen center counter top paint ( what type)

Hello please can I get some advice from the experts..
I don't have a photo yet to show but I have a dark wooden center work station with a cherry colour wooden top and want to paint it a lighter colour( just the work top) I
was thinking of white but not sure.. Can you suggest what paint to use as I will be using it a lot to prepare foods etc on.. It's in the middle of my kitchen...

Hi,

I would steer away from white. I am in similar situation like you and am an interior designer. There are lots of options but the one I'm more inclining to (in your case) is light grey like Farrow & Ball Pavilion Gray for example. It's pale but has a hint of grey tone in it which would create a really nice contrast between the warmth of the cherry wood. Also if you are using the top a lot, I'm using mine all the time, have you perhaps considered having a glass top? My top got really badly damaged by a oven cleaner gel when I put the tray on it and the whole surface just peeled off. In my case I want to protect it with glass. Just a thought...

I think you would be better off replacing it with a hygienic new surface rather than painting it - especially as it's a food prep area !

Hi, In this case you would need to create open plan kitchen together with dining room. Get rid of the wall in between and create cosy, open a space area. Range cooker would be nice, but not next to the door. You are going to loose working place, plus open fire next to entrance is not an option. If you are planing to "redecorate" your kitchen only, you can simply get new doors for base units, new wall units & new extractor would be nice too. Maybe something industrial looking? Accessories, plants, new tiles would make the kitchen looking alive till the time you will decide to get a new kitchen. Where are so many shaker style doors! So many colours and finishes it's mad! So if you would like to improve your kitchen with minimal investment, get creative! Small bits and peaces will make it look like kitchen where you would like to spend your time. Which is the most important.

My husband is colorblind too (and our 4 year old too). Can't tell the diference between pale green and beige, between purple and navy. He lets me pick the colors for our house and simply says if he likes certain combinations or not. Even if he can't tell what color it is, if it looks good as a whole, he's fine with it. So even if you can't relate to a color, but it looks okay or in balance with the other colors, trust the wife. ;) All earthtones could be lovely, but some pop would be fun too (like sage/seablue). Just depends on the feel/style you want to achieve.

I'm in Northern Ireland and used Dee Light Furniture Facelifts NI. He has a Facebook page with lots of photos of his work showing lots of colours so its worth a look there. His standard of work is excellent and came highly recommended by word of mouth. He also builds this tear drop caravans to order! I think it was worth paying someone as he made our existing doors and drawers look brand new filling the holes from the old handles. We could never have done that to his standard

I can just about see the marks that you mean, and really do sympathise, but your kitchen looks fabulous! When I get a new 'thing', i am horribly anxious until the first mark, after which I find I can relax. You have to live in the space, not maintain a showhome. My pal's husband installed a uniquely-shaped gleaming stainless steel countertop and, during the first week, while whisking a vinaigrette, she got salt under the bowl. Disaster. So, amidst much angst, husband took wire wool to the whole surface to achieve a grainy surface. Temporary disappointment followed by relaxation! Time to get out your Grayson Perry vase of peonies and open a bottle...

If it's truly a wood top, sand and refinish it. I would never directly put something hot on any of the solid surfaces or cut on them. They do say you can however. I've used sample pieces to test and they do show markings. As to paint, it sounds like a great idea but, as we all know, some ideas are best kept as ideas only. Would be wonderful if it could be so easy.
