Warm Air Heating

Just moved into a house with warm air heating (rather than radiators). Any hints and tips on how to keep the bills down? Seems that it can be expensive & I wasn't sure if I've missed something obvious .... other than keeping the thermostat down of course! Thanks

Appreciate it was winter when you posted this, but we've got the same in a a bungalow. I was staggered it was still working. We've been quoted around £5k for a vented system (rather than combi as its too big a bungalow to make that vfm and advantageous). I don't really understand heating systems either but the air/storage is difficult to control especially if you're out at work - you have to plan ahead and guess how warm you want it later, don't you? We knew we were buying a do-er upper and the heating was going to be done. I think £5k is a good investment and will more than pay us back in any future maintenance of the air system and ultimately through the end property value. On this one occasion, I would go with convention.m hope you've been happy with your decision if you've done it already.

I had warm air heating in my old house when I moved in, is this what it is? Will it even be very economical to run this type of heating, especially if by the sounds of it, you also need to install modern heating? I'd be tempted to get rid, I think you'll find that once you start to remove the ducting and the housing for it that you'll get quite a bit more space in the rooms too. I also think it would be quite difficult to modernise the ducting and get a finish you'd be happy with. Sorry to be all doom and gloom, but sometimes some things aren't worth saving from an economical or aesthetic point of view! Good luck and let me know how you get on!

Regardless of what finish you choose, the thing with wet UFH is that it relies on heat building up in and being stored in the floor slab. You don’t really ever turn it off in the winter, you just set the room thermostats for different temperatures at different times of the day. In the summer you just set the thermostat to frost setting so it never kicks in. We have tiles and I like having a cool floor in the summer heat, as do my dogs. In autumn and spring other finishes may feel more cosy as sometimes the tiled floor doesn’t feel obviously warm when the air is up to temp, tho it’s not properly cold either.

It seems to me that you can either have a conventional boiler that heats water and pumps it around radiators, or a warm air system or some sort of electrical heat source in every room. (Assuming an ASHP is not practical and installing a wet underfloor heating system is too disruptive and oil is undesirable). When I looked at this I concluded that if I were starting from scratch I would have chosen a warm air system which seems to be the heating of choice in colder countries like Canada and in Scandinavia. Warm air heating does seem to work faster than radiators and modern advances in filters mean it’s no longer associated with dust or allergens as it was in the 70s. You also free up wall space although the ducting will need consideration. Whether or not you decide on radiators or hot air the thing to consider next is the fuel source. It seems to me that with gas price rises the gap between gas and the more expensive electricity is narrowing. It does however seem that more powerful gas boilers are available than electric ones and the water flow rates are better so if you choose a combi then you can get a good flow rate for your morning shower. You might still conclude you prefer electric boilers (apparently they last longer and don’t need the regular servicing of a gas boiler). If you go the electric route then you might decide on more than one boiler, a tank of hot water rather than heating it on demand and thermostats in each room make it more efficient.
