Help needed on living room: rug, fireplace, cushions

I'd appreciate some help on our living room. We've recently repainted the room but now I'm looking for the finishing touches.
My questions are: rug: do we need a different size and/or colour?
Fireplace: we would like to get a mirror to place above the fireplace. What type should we get? I'm thinking large and rectangular, but hesitating between black (to match the fireplace screen) or gold/bronze barockstyle? Any thoughts?
The cushions are old and can be thrown out? Open to suggestions!
In general, any comments (also on lay-out -- we are considering placing tv to the left of the fireplace and moving the couch, for instance) would be much appreciated.

Comments (6)Hi Philipa, That is a great fireplace! You would definitely have to remove the current tiles but I would personally keep the hearth and surround and re-tile it all the same. You could even do the whole height in the same tiles like this: I am also obsessed with your floors they are so beautiful I would just leave them like that or maybe paint them a chalky white. It’s a lovely design and will complement the characteristics of the room perfectly. Comments (15)I think you could put the tv in the opposite corner on the other side of the window, then put the two chairs (if they'll fit) side by side on that wall (with the door) with the table in between. If these are a bit too snug, you could always angle them into the centre of the room. Then the sofa could go opposite the window at right angles to the door, but a little over towards the fireplace wall. This will give you clearly defined "square" sitting room area, which you can further delineate with a rug in your chosen accent colour and then add coordinating or matching cushions and throws. I would then move what I think is a glass cabinet (in the corner of the dining part of the room) to the left hand side of the radiator cabinet. I would then try to move the dining table more towards the kitchen and the now empty corner. For the dining table I would look at getting something like a table runner or a big bowl/vase/ornament with reflects your chosen accent colour which will visually join up the two areas. I would also be tempted to replace one of the pictures with a large mirror. And also perhaps think about getting different wall art....See Moreboundsgreener
9 years agoFirst of all, you aren't clueless :)
I would follow your gut and turn the couch to face the fireplace, put the TV on the oak box near the window, the armchair and side table over near the built in dresser, and the red cabinet between the two windows where the armchair was. I like both your pieces of art on the other side of the room. If the red cabinet is between the two windows, you might want to switch the vertical piece with the one that is on the wall above the dining table - just see how it looks. Actually, I think the bird painting could look really good above the fireplace - it will add visual height (as jonathan suggested) and brings some red to that side of the room and it has bits of black and charcoal to tie in the fireplace and the couch...... If you have the TV to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the map (I like it for personal reasons :).
Anyway, you really want a mirror up there.... it's a bit tricky because the fireplace is off set. Something this shape would be fab because most other items in there are really angular, but this one is too big and the price is crazy:

I actually like the rug size and colour - it ties in with the blinds and the taupe in two pieces of your art and has good texture. Add a few more cushions to the couch and armchair in a couple of different fabrics. Maybe some of these:

9 years agoThank you all! I am indeed considering a bit more colour. The armchair is a 12-year old Ikea chair (talking about quality: it's still comfy, but we're ready for something new...), and is due for replacement. We may just be bold.
In addition, I am considering painting the wooden side tables in a dual colour scheme, like the stool in attached pic. White/wood or white/ orange maybe?

I would suggest adding some colour. You have a beautiful room. Warm tones work well all year round. Perhaps just pick out the fireplace wall and alcoves with a feature colour - mustard yellow always looks inviting. Add cushions to your sofa which add some colour too. I think you could make this room much more interesting with some colourful art too.
