Spiral Staircase

I'm in the process of buying a 1930's house which currently has a built in loft ladder. In order to do a standard loft conversion with a normal flight of stairs I would need to cut directly across a lovely stained glass window. Does anyone know if a spiral staircase would need any structural changes to the floor below? From what I can tell, all of the loading is on the central column and presumably a house of this type is not built to withstand such an increase in weight on one single point???
