Can you have too many cushions on your bed?

Pillows and cushions can look inviting and cosy, but can you overdo it by piling on too many on your bed?

When does a bed go from cosy to cluttered? And more importantly, how many pillows and cushions do YOU have on your bed?

What is this nonsense with cushions?! Utterly impractical and inevitably covered in dust. A bed requires pillows, not cushions!

We have 6 when we go to sleep - and about 2 left by the time we wake up, all the others are on the floor.

I like lots of pillows, deep fluffy ones are good but sometimes the ultra deep hotel type ones have a tendency to fold back over your face and suffocate you when you lie on them!

This is a tricky one, I think a bed always looks more inviting with lots of sumptuous cushions strewn across it. Also there are so many stunning fabrics and designs that it's difficult to resist from adding more and more! I currently have 6 cushions but when it comes to sleeping I have just one good quality pillow. It just takes a little longer to get in to bed since I have to take all the cushions off the bed first.

I used to allow my Burmese anywhere and the wake up 'boofs' - cat talk for running up the bed and patting me on my face to wake me to feed them - were lovely. Then I started showing and breeding & got more cats. I'd wake to find myself on the edge of the bed while they sprawled out over 7/8ths of it! Now they all sleep in the kitchen, but kittens are due next month and will be born in my bedroom. No doubt my 1st time 'mummy' will bring them onto the bed one at a time, and I just can't wait!!!!!!

I install home automation equipment and lighting controls. I don't have a TV in the house : ) I do though, have a projector with a retractable screen. This has totally changed the way we watch TV. We only watch what we want to - which is mainly programs recorded via Youview or films. When the projector isn't on, the screen is out of sight in the ceiling and the room is setup for more social activities. Personally, I couldn't be without the radio. We have speakers in every room for this and music in general. Upstairs this is done with inceiling speakers so again, it is a discrete system.

I'm in my mid-thirties and on house 25! My partner is a few years older, and on his third. Everyone's experience is different! For me, it has to be my current house. It's smaller than every one of my previous homes, was a total wreck when I bought it, has no parking, drained my life savings, had mice, still has a to do list as long as your arm, and has been a massive pain in the b*tt. HOWEVER: it is the house my partner and I have been doing up together, and through which we bonded and got to know each other's strengths and weaknesses. It is the house where I learned to trust my own taste and honed my bargain hunting skills. It is the first place I lived in all by myself, and bought on my own, and it is where I finally learnt to be myself, be confident in myself and not worry about what other people think. It might not be perfect, it might be teenytiny, but House No.25 is my first real Home.

I never thought we'd need a second fridge as we have a large American Fridge Freezer but, due to a cost saving exercise, the NHS have decided that I have to have my medications (injections) delivered once every 3 months now instead of monthly which means that I can take up half an under counter Fridge just for my meds. We had no choice but to put an extra fridge in the garage. It is handy though, especially at Christmas time.

I think they look lovely as in 'dressed' but you can't sleep with cushions. I have one at the moment because I can take it off and put it on a chair at night. If I had more than that, I'd need some kind of basket to put them in when I wanted to sleep and then redress the bed in the morning. It is a bit of a phaff when there are so many other things to do before work.

Somtimes it can be a bit of a chore removing them all before bed, but defiantly using lots of cushions is a good touch in designing a stylish bedroom. Many hotels use the lots of cushions effect for great first impressions and I think if you walked into a room with just a couple of cushions on the bed, it wouldn't look very inviting.

Cushions and throws are a great way of giving a bedroom a really inviting look and making the bed the main focus. I say never more than 5 or you can fill your bedroom with discarded pillows come night time. A huge bolster is also a great answer to fill the bed but leaving you with only one cushion to remove.

2 pillows. when we stay elsewhere & they have more i always struggle with where to put them as we don't use them. they normally end up on the floor. they just annoy me.

I would say not, I think they add a little something, but my husband would disagree :O) Although it can be a pain removing before sleeping!

Cushions are definitely a nice addition to a bed when it comes to comfort and cosiness. Rich, fluffy cushions add to the feeling you want to have when you are in bed: you want to feel relaxed. Besides, although they can be a pain to remove before sleeping if you have too many of them, they upgrade your bed to the next design level. I have 5 cushions, all of them rectangular and fluffy. I have mixed the colours, patterns, and textures in order to make my bed stand out: a nice trick for that is to use white sheets, and vivid and colourful cushions to contrast with the whiteness of the bed. Plain velvety mustard yellow and fushia plain cushions mixed with green geometric patterns, ... I've got them all!

Cushions look nice and are a designer's friend, often acting to bring all the colours in a room together. BUT I think they are totally impractical and I don't have any on my bed. I would rather design for a bed that has beautiful bedlinen and large pillows, with a cover that is warm and inviting. When I stay in a hotel it drives me mad to have to take numerous cushions off the bed and I must admit to throwing them on the floor and swearing at the same time! Maybe that's where the term scatter cushion comes from!

I personally prefer not to go over the top with too many cushions. I would say maximum 4 pillows and 3-5 cushions. If nothing else it gets very frustrating re-arranging them every day. They do make your bed look very inviting though. I always love the look of beds when you get to your hotel. It is always simple and classy. No more than 4 pillows. But when it comes to cushions, either have an odd number and keep them in pairs with a different smaller cushion at the front. Or keep them in pairs with 4 and have them stacked neatly in size order. Our bed in the Showroom has 4 pillows and 5 cushions. 3 large and 2 small.

Yes. It is possible to dress a bed without having to remove loads of cushions every night (and put them back again in the morning). We have just our pillows for sleeping/ reading and 2 little decorative cushions.

In fact a Uk comedian did a funny sketch where he basically described bed cushions as a kind of pet for your bed.

You can never have too many cushions on your bed, but make sure you actually place them on your bed the next morning otherwise its just no point I think. If this is a style you like, perhaps do it in your spare room where its more visible.
